This is a delicious anthology of horror and dark romance! Fairytales are one of my favourite things on this earth and this collection didn't disappoint. All the stories were intriguing and original, while still beautifully evocative of traditional ta This is a delicious anthology of horror and dark romance! Fairytales are one of my favourite things on this earth and this collection didn't disappoint. All the stories were intriguing and original, while still beautifully evocative of traditional tales. They were told with love for storytelling and captured the darkness, strangeness and playfulness at the heart of our most haunting bedtime stories. While they use fairytale elements, they aren't retellings, but entirely new stories, so lots to sink your teeth into! Between lyrical prose, vivid imagery, brutal shocks, and uncanny slow burns, there's so much in here that I'm hooked on. I keep replaying my favourite scenes in my head while I walk around my house! Really excited to read more by these authors.

The anthology weaves between modern and fantastical settings, creeping and violent horror, and touching and terrifying scenes. I loved the variety of MCs and the different ways they all fell to the darkness. They all had their own depths and arcs that really worked to draw the reader in, and I felt for them no matter how grey or ghoulish they were. This was a great collection for horror with heart. The authors didn't hold back on gore and chills, but themes of revenge, temptation, liberation, and love were all handled so thoughtfully and gave the stories that vital heartbeat that the old tales have. We tell fairytales to unravel our desires and fears - the unknown of the dark woods, facing loss, trying to build a life, falling in love. Reading this anthology gave me all those tingles and big feelings! This collection is definitely going to stick with me, just like fairytales should.

My personal favourites were Nourishment (Gareth Ian) for the way the horror crept into the idyllic, The Hours in Between (Memo Rable) for a beautiful story that flipped the fairytale of punishing vain women to helping women seek fulfilment over performance, Foxglove (Stacey LP) for poetic language and a mystery that made me hold my breath, Scorpion Grass (Grace Vice) for some extremely satisfying and gruesome revenge and redemption, and Spit and Spite and All Things Night (Ellen Winter) for an absolutely stunning opening! But a lot of this is personal taste, all the authors deserve love, so get this anthology and find your own favourites! ...more

But Lark gets out of jail because this book is such a gem! The attraction between Coco and Vale sizzles, the close quarters apartment makes for so much delicious chemistry, and adorable diva dog Mariah Scary is iconic.

As an irl academic, I loved Coco's journey with the pressure she puts on herself, rom hiding her s3xy and nerdy sides to owning her space and all her facets. It was beautiful seeing her step into her power, sensuality and quirks. Her confidence was delightful, but always felt realistically paced and experienced for someone with her hang ups. As someone dealing with an academic career not working out how it was supposed to, I felt Coco's shame and anxiety deeply and her story made me happy cry with reassurance. We are more than our goals, but we can also trust ourselves to meet them and reach out for support! Thank you, Lark, I needed that.

Vale's slow burn letting go of his mask got me right in the heart. His step into vulnerability was so sweet, but I think it was his growing maturity that I really loved. Romcoms often end in an explosive gesture that doesn't necessarily signal long-term change. When Vale turned his final corner, it's clear it's for life, and that made the HEA feel extra forever. Also I loved reading it last and suddenly humanising Judge Grimshaw! A new favourite side character who went from a hilarious obstacle to a touching character in his own right. Lark Green really did say everyone has something going on under the surface, not just the MCs. This is a fun and sweet story about two people stuck in their old teenaged anxieties helping each other grow into their best selves and get comfy in their own skin (and k!nks). I recommend it to every 30-something also on that journey.

I also really recommend it for therapy-positivity! I’ve seen a few books with characters in therapy, but never a therapist MC! It’s actually so nice seeing a therapist portrayed as a full person who wants to help, but is also curious and a puzzle solver. The fear of therapy is so real, as we see in her patients, and I genuinely think this is a book to read if you need to quiet that anxiety.

But it’s the f3md0m positivity that had me completely feral! I love a big, dramatic d0mme scene, but it was so sweet and real reading about a woman discovering that side of herself and two people exploring a dynamic and all the ways it could be good for them, both in and out of the bedroom. The way Coco’s emotional intelligence guided her to spot and draw out Vale’s secret submissive was so tender and felt so affirming to d0mmes as partners. It was also great having a shy woman get to find her power and have it come so naturally to her (rather than my pet peeve - d0mme is shocked/appalled at her own s3xuality). Coco is both cautious and grounded in her budding persona and she felt really satisfying and true as a first time d0mme. It was so fun how the couple played with different dynamics all the way through! I love smvt that feels like it feeds the character arcs. Not only are these two tingly to read, but how they develop their s3x life really enriches the whole book’s theme of masks, personas, and letting go. Has there ever been a dumber man with better intentions? No, no, there has not. I love him, your honour. Lucy Limón might have done the impossible in making a loveable pick-up artist. When we first meet Chad he seems like a slick player (or worse, he's trying to be), but we get to know a hopeless romantic with the biggest heart and the biggest stick up his cute butt. I think I averaged about 20 evil cackles an hour reading Iggy unravel this secret stickler. The Casanova-settles-down romcom is a classic, but Lucy absolutely made it fresh. Instead of a sleazeball reluctantly learning respect for one (1) woman, we got an extremely earnest and romantic person who was just a little too invested in manifesting his planned life and learned to go after happiness rather than safety. Instead of forcing a female audience to forgive a creep because he has a backstory, we got a character with a seriously complicated present day who's doing his best and gets the space to relax and be genuine. Chad should have been the worst, but goddammit, she pulled him off. I'm furious.

He gets extra flowers because I'm obsessed with this portrayal of a park ranger! I grew up in a (British) national park and can confirm that his easy exterior with rules nerd interior is absolutely accurate. I adore his relationship with land and community, the way the volcano makes the fiery heart of the book, and the portrayal of environmental care as unglamorous, under-funded, routine grunt work instead of something saccharine. Me and Chad are both very protective of the hills and frustrated by people who think the countryside is an idyllic theme park with no responsibilities. I have a real bee in my bonnet about rural life being idealised in books. Chad's life was so refreshing and relatable. His job is underpaid, his work is hard and dirty and dangerous, his family is a mess that doesn't magically fix, and his community is both a sanctuary and a tangle. It's not all perfect nuclear families, manicured gardens, and wealth. Rural life is real life, and I love this book for that.

But Iggy's getting all the flowers from me! She's definitely one of my favourite FMCs ever. I love her comedy, attitude, stubbornness, and the fear at her core that makes her story so real. I love, love, LOVE that this isn't a story about a black cat getting fixed by a golden retriever. Iggy is changed by love, but she firmly takes the reins in her own journey. She also sees the flaws in Chad and her hard edges become assets in his life, giving her so much nuance and making her so loveable in her imperfection. She's never written judgementally. She's flawed, but she's always sympathetic, her reactions always make sense, and she's always a riot. Her deal-making was some of my favourite demon writing of all time and I love that it was so consistent in her way of thinking and their dynamic. Plus, gotta love a goth queen.

Spark is a story that seems to be about opposites attract, but ends up being about two similarly stubborn souls. Chad and Iggy release their ideals and go for the messy reality, and I'm head over heels about them!

I also just love the sense of place in this book. From the Under the Volcano bar to the national park, I really felt like I lived in Winter Bliss. I was stupidly excited for the volcano scene, like honestly I don’t want to spoil it but it’s gold. Catrina writes with unique compassion and emotional wisdom, not just in the forming of character, but in knowing how to tell a story that so deeply reaches, satisfies, and eaves you with a lasting sense of being in harmony with yourself. This story is a ton of chaotic fun, but it's also pretty special.

Birdie is such an excellent FMC. She's strong but she's containing a struggle and vulnerable. She's tough but not unfeeling. She's anxious but composed and brave. She's mature but figuring it out. And she's so nerdy and weird but never feels like a "quirky girl." She's so human. By the end, I felt so much pride and love for her. I just want to hold her, and that makes me want to hold myself and all the parts of me like her.

Rex is just soooo attractive. My tip-top type is a wreck of a man with a mouth full of sass and a heart of gold, and Catrina got him PERFECT. He ticks a bunch of boxes, but also doesn't feel ormulaic. He feels, like Birdie, very real and whole. I feel so safe with him, I want only the best for him and I love him with my whole heart. Above all, the way he chases Birdie's fire is so beautiful. It feels like a love letter to every woman who sealed herself away to convenience other people. I hope he finds every girl who ever worried she was a burden for feeling too much! So hot, so healing. I keep a picture of the two of them on my altar now as a reminder to honour my fire, like Rex would.

I am absolutely blown away by the portrayal of emotion. The control, the loss of it, the way it drives, the way it confuses. These characters are so differently emotional and both make complete sense and are so relatable. Their growth is so satisfying and believable. Catrina broke/mended my heart for portraying the lasting impact of parental divorce in a way that feels honest and complicated. The neurodiversity rep made me so happy and seen. But most gold stars go to her delicate handling of emotional manipulation - how even a strong, sensible, independent person can not realise it's happening to them, and the way it gets inside you but can be burned out with passion. Birdie's evolution and liberation were everything to me and made me not only feel seen, but genuinely helped me see some things that were still cloudy on my own journey.

I feel like I've said a lot of heavy stuff here, so let's also not forget, this book is so hilarious and chaotic! Every time I picked it up my serotonin just spiked. The demonic horses! All the animal companions! Rex's many, MANY shenanigans! Cheese is life! So much searing chemistry and banter between two characters who just glow with how much they enjoy each other. There's just pure glee at the heart of this story. And alongside all the laughter is a lovely, warm, but uncompromising set of values about community and environment. I cared so much about Birdie and Rex not just for their romance, but for the way they wanted to impact Winter Bliss. Seeing their dream come to life was everything! This is a tender, thoughtful sapphic love story that tugged so many heart strings and left me feeling held. It can be hard when portraying queer relationships to find the balance between hope/happiness and being honest about the trauma and sense of unsafety we carry. Merlina Garance beautifully walks that line, giving these sapphic lovers a touching HEA while keeping the oppressive system they live in present and thorny. I love queer-normativity or burning it all down, but those things aren’t my reality and there’s something special about reading a story about queer people trapped in a system, that explores the tension and melancholy of that state, but shows love and the natural world as unbeatable and the power of choosing to be together against the odds.

This is a sweet and tempting love story with chemistry full of warmth and gentle humour. The romance is a journey of discovery, Cerris falling love and learning a new way of seeing the world in tandem. The pair come together through acts of solidarity and expressions of curiosity and trust. It’s exactly the dynamic I think we need right now, queer love that queers the world, queer love that means friendship as much as lust. Merlina Garance beautifully interweaves queer relationships with each other and queer relationships with nature. The forest setting is rich and the way it and Sinha reflect each other has such a magical quality.

I absolutely loved the portrayal of nature as equally cosy and dangerous. The forest is open to being a friend, if that friendship is earned, but it will bite back. Likewise, Sinha’s huge compassion was balanced perfectly with her hard edges and will to survive. Plus, there’s so many adorable animal companions! As a country girl at heart, this book really well captured the forest as both sanctuary and hazard, a subtly and kindly done metaphor for queerness within a rigid society.

The Robin Hood vibes of legendary forest dwellers vs greedy nobles were delightful. Merlina made a convincing Medieval world populated by realistic bodies and relationships. It steers clear of GoT gratuity or tired stereotypes and authentically portrays the tensions between castle and wilderness, rich and poor, orders and ethics, systemic power and personal agency. I’m so in love with how the characters’ bodies matched their lives, muscle, fat, smell, strain, motion always so grounded and relatable, instead of idealised women. It made their love story feel even more true, and I left them with zero doubt they’d be together forever! While the world feels large, the story focuses in on the private world between Cerris and Sinha, and that intimacy really drew me in, the trees closing in around me.
