Born in sweltering Singapore, Celine Ong (she/they) was raised in mosh pits, and writes queer romance novels about chaos gremlins with bad manners, weird feelings, and big hearts. Their proudest accomplishment is being able to, completely unprovoked, quote the entirety of Venom: Let There Be Carnage by heart.

HOLD ME LIKE A GRUDGE is their debut novel. LOSER NEW YEAR comes out in 2027.

if a rivalry lasts longer than 7 years, then you are no longer rivals. you are gay.

growing up i watched quite a lot of sports, and then veered into wrestling (surprise!). what i saw there was how queer athletes asked for queer storylines but it got nixed every time, how i’ve not seen queerness acknowledge outside of pride month nor on tv.

and it is for that reason why i love sports romance. it’s one of my favorite subgenres.

so: heated rivalry !! the epitome of rivals-with-benefits to lovers between shane and ilya. when something meant to be purely physical becomes something more, as they slowly give each other pieces of themselves. and then inevitably - “since when did i start giving you my heart” all while knowing that this can’t happen, the risk is too great.

i love seeing queer athletes simply existing and seeing them falling in love in a world that pretends that can’t happen. i love them making coming out their own, at their own pace and comfort, on their own terms, even if that sometimes just means their friends and their himbo hivemind team because athletes are still /people/ and they deserve their own story without a spotlight being shone in it, they deserve to find love without each move being scrutinized.

“when will i have you for as long as i want?” is my favorite line from heated rivalry. sports romance, especially when on different teams, asks: how do you build a life together when you are constantly moving from place to place? and so every single second together counts and is so precious. i love to see the effort put in, the commitment, how you know when they are in, they’re in for the long haul (or the long game haha i’m crying its fine)

there’s a lot of smut, the quiet moments hit me the hardest. the vulnerable moments spent lying awake in bed thinking about possible futures together, the wants, the wishes, the could-have-beens. the things so close within reach, yet like a dream.

as i flew through the rest of game changers, and fell more and more in love with each book. i loved watching the culture evolve, the gradual changes, the way love prevails through all of it. i love witnessing how the dream slowly becomes closer and closer to reality.

anyway i’m going to cry over the long game again now bye!
