Roald Dahl was my favorite writer as a kid. I thought he was a genius! His books were filled with such an interesting sense of adventure, each with a specific charm that left you craving more. Growing up I seemed to graduate away from fantasy and on to horror and crime. Though these were never my favorite genres, I found the suspense threading each story together addictive. I was fascinated by the tension in these books and became hooked. However I think the book at the top of my all-time list is Tuesdays with Morrie. I know it’s a common favorite but I just found it so thought provoking. As a writer my aim is to take all of the best features of each genre and create a new brand of young-adult fantasy

I'm in the process of republishing the kindle version of Birthright (about a week or 2) so hopefully that will be available as soon as possible. You could still read book 2 and make sense out of it without reading book 1, but if you want to wait I completely understand. Thanks for reaching out, and I like your enthusiasm for book 2. Ohh and please, for future reference, I'm just a Barry!(less)

Before I even start writing I have plotted out what will happen in each chapter and with each character. I have a lot of admiration for writers that can just sit down and write but unfortunately I’m not in that group. I need to know how everything is going to tie together and make sense at the end. The second element that helps is my writing speed… It’s very slow, which means even if I ever did hit a creative barrier, I would hit it very slowly.(less)

World of Pain

In response to a very enjoyable re-occurring theme, I’m going to offer a little background to some of the worlds in the Birthright series. As Dangermaze is the most recently published, the world that sticks out the most to me is the World of Pain. It is part of a tri-world system including the World of Happiness and the World of Anger. The dynamic between these worlds is simple, you reside in the Read more of this blog post »

God has had a great deal written about Him; nothing has been written about me. God is bigger, like my mother, easier to find, even in the dark. I could be anywhere, and since I can't describe myself I can't ask for help.”

“[D]on't ever apologise to an author for buying something in paperback, or taking it out from a library (that's what they're there for. Use your library). Don't apologise to this author for buying books second hand, or getting them from bookcrossing or borrowing a friend's copy. What's important to me is that people read the books and enjoy them, and that, at some point in there, the book was bought by someone. And that people who like things, tell other people. The most important thing is that people read...”
