A fragment of conversation he can’t place. One day, while sorting through old documents, he finds an unlabelled flash drive buried inside an envelope addressed to someone he’s never met. It contains fragments of schematics, encrypted messages, and references to a defunct project code-named War Machine — a name he once used for one of his books, except… some of the file dates predate the manuscript.

The deeper he digs, the more he realises his old fiction might not have been fiction at all. Is someone planting ideas in his mind? Has he forgotten a part of his own past? Or has he accidentally uncovered something buried — deliberately — during his time in the UK’s military-adjacent engineering world?

As former contacts turn cold and new ones start watching him too closely, Richard finds himself forced to play detective in his own life, uncovering a decades-old conspiracy… one he may have written without knowing.

If you’ve ever caught yourself contemplating the philosophical implications of a misplaced towel or questioning the bureaucratic structure of a flatulent demon-run postal service, then you already know what kind of literary mischief Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett were up to.
