Hi Marissa. Thank you for the question, and your recent email. It is a pleasure to meet you, too.

I'm currently reading "Becoming a Writer" by Dorothea Brande because I hope to learn something new. So far, I find her words very encouraging. I always look for ways to inspire writing. (less)

When authors write reviews, they're playing the role of readers rather than authors. This is slightly different in review groups because authors promise one another to TRY to read to the end, while general readers may simply quit after a single page. Bottom line is no, you can't call a reviewer out because you suspect they haven't finished the book. And never argue with them. A review expresses opinion, not topics for debate.

The best you can do is evaluate why the reviewer stopped reading. Perhaps the reviewer's complaint about too much information gives you a clue that the story gets bogged down, and the reader didn't care what happened at the end. That is painful to hear, but the feedback is useful. Not that you have to delete all the info, but you could consider ways to weave in more action, suspense, mystery, etc.

Only you can decide whether the reviewer has a point or not--it's your story. You can either make changes, or accept the fact that not everyone is going to like your writing. Sine people love all the details that go into world building. How you respond to the criticism depends on who your audience is.

As a funny aside, I had a "reviewer" give a book that was not yet published 1 star because he didn't like the trailer. Against those kind of folks, you have to get creative.

I hope that helps. (less)

A good book to take to the beach!

In this modern David-and-Goliath tale, an average guy proves that giants are seldom as powerful as they appear.

"My First Dystopian Science Fiction Satire

One of the downfalls in Science Fiction for me is when the author introduces so much futuristic and imaginative technology that I become numb to it. Of course, the story ends as it does, because there is one m" Read more of this review »
