Primarily it was a coming-together of my own reading; noticing trends at the local book franchise - how the Gnostic and "Alternative Gospels" genre were expanding on the store's shelves; recognizing that Brown's "Da Vinci Code" had been a number 1 seller for some three years at that point; discussions with folks from my own congregation and other churches; listening to what people "on the street" were saying about Brown's book, or Elaine Pagels' works, etc. (less)

On the one hand, a little gloomy (the end of Christendom, etc.). On the other hand, thought provoking. Author is a bit left of center theologically (I think). Still worth a read for reflection.

“I didn’t go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.”

C.S. Lewis
“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, and Other Addresses

C.S. Lewis
“There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, in the end, "Thy will be done." All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. Those who knock it is opened.”

Michael Philliber In a large segment of Christianity, this is the Commemoration of the Slaughter of the Children of Bethlehem - Matthew 2.18-18.

"We remember today, O God, the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by King Herod. Receive, we pray, into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims; and by your great might frustrate the designs of evil powers, tyrants, and those who take the lives of others unjustly; and establish your rule of justice, love, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen" (adapted and modified from the Book of Common Prayer-1979).
