Gardening seems to work best, because I daydream about the book I'm writing while I work, but going for a walk or riding my horse works as well. Other times it helps to go for a drive, especially to a couple of specific places where the scenery reminds me of locations in the books. I had a bit of writer's block last weekend, so I drove out to a rural valley road and went for an hour and a half hike up a logging road. It was beautiful and inspiring, and worked like a charm.

Music also helps me get into the zone - I have playlists on Spotify for each book/series that help me get into the 'zone' for writing about those characters. (less)

But if I had to pick one BEST thing, it would be the opportunity and ability to convey emotions through stories by drawing readers into a world of your own imagining. Making people cry with one simple sentence - so many people have said that the final line of "Dare to Dream" still brings a lump to their throat whenever they think of it, and that makes me so proud.

Why Joey Potter is the (true) protagonist of Dawson’s Creek

It is a truth universally acknowledged in storytelling that in order for your protagonist to be relatable and to drive the story forward in a compelling way, they need to have a goal that they’re working towards, something tangible that they want to achieve. The purpose of a story is to take the reader/audience on a journey with the protagonist, who is the person driving the story forward to i

“She'd missed the way he walked, the way he shoved his hands into his pockets when he was nervous, the way his dark hair fell into his mismatched eyes. The way a smile would flicker across his face before he committed to it, the way he looked at her like she was the only person in the world.”
Kate Lattey

“Never tell her that something is impossible, because she'll kill herself proving you wrong.”
Kate Lattey, Dare to Dream

“Real is...just being you. It's not letting yourself be defined by other people's opinions of you, of who they think you are, or what they expect you to be. It's refusing to let them squash you into the box they've built for you, and just being yourself, no matter what anyone else thinks. Because you're never going to matter to everyone, just like everyone's never going to matter to you. So you choose the people whose opinions you care about, and you be real for them.”

“His mane was like a crest, mounting, then falling low. His neck was long and slender, and arched to the small, savagely beautiful head. The head was that of the wildest of all wild creatures- a stallion born wild- and it was beautiful, savage, splendid. A stallion with a wonderful physical perfection that matched his savage, ruthless spirit.”

“Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things you want to learn. Sixteen years on the streets and you see a lot. But all the wrong sights, not the things you want to see.”
