A most redemptive birth story

David Kent was born three weeks early on February 11th, 2026: two days after the 70th birthday of his namesake, my late father David Caplin (this is the completely scientific reason I knew immediately we were having a boy: a February due date). Since I was induced (thanks to complications with gestational diabetes and cholestasis),… Continue reading A most redemptive birth story

Written by an Anglican priest, Feasting on Hope is a beautifully written explanation of how communion is anything but a rote or “man made” tradition, but a way to experience Christ himself. For many Christians hungry for liturgy but afraid of traditi ...more

“For anyone who wonders what it's like to have a tragedy shatter your existence, this is what I would tell them: it's like going through the motions of everyday life in a zombified state. It's having outbursts of anger for what seems like no apparent reason, for even the smallest of offenses. It's forgetting how to be your once cheerful, perky self, and having to relearn basic social skills when mingling with new people (especially if those people are ignorant, or just plain terrible at showing sympathy). It takes a while to re-learn all those basic skills. Maybe...it's possible. Maybe you have to want your life back first, before it can start repairing itself But then you also have to accept that the mending process may take the rest of your life. I don't think there's a set time limit for it.”
Sarahbeth Caplin, Someone You Already Know

“In my experience, Jews don’t have the same pressure to reframe it in a more sanitary context, assuring the sufferer that there’s a higher, holy purpose for this awful situation. Rather, they accept it for what it is. They aren’t afraid to simply say, “That really sucks.” I wish more Christians would realize it’s perfectly okay to say that sometimes. It’s okay to not have answers. Sometimes empathizing, not theologizing, is the most Christ-like response.”
Sarahbeth Caplin, Confessions of a Prodigal Daughter: a memoir

“The more I wrestle with faith, the more I start to believe it’s better to be the kind of Christian who admits “I don’t know,” rather than throwing out the parts of the bible that don’t make sense.”
Sarahbeth Caplin, Confessions of a Prodigal Daughter: a memoir
