Being a writer is more like being gay - one day you admit it to yourself. You come out and hope people don't turn you away.

Even though I've been writing for myself since I was a child, it took me a long time to admit to myself that I wanted my writing to be experienced by others. It seemed so presumptuous! Last summer, I read an article suggesting Mary Shelley's Frankenstein could be read from a feminist perspective and I was intrigued enough to pull out the decades-old copy on my bookshelf and have another go at it. I didn't get what the article's author was suggesting, but it did send me down a path that eventually led me to Southern Gothic fiction and *that* was something I understood very well.
