SWWJ Summer Tea

Yesterday the Society of Women Writers and Journalists gathered at the BMA for our summer tea. This was a new – and very splendid – venue for us. Liz Moseley from Good Housekeeping gave a fascinating talk about the history of the magazine followed by a very interesting Q and A session.

I was thrilled to be announced as the winner of the recent ‘Winner Takes All’ competition and the following photos of Viv Brown awarding me the certificate were taken by fellow SWWJ member, Karen Storey.

Altogether an unforgettable day, not least because of the sweltering heat in central London! Many thanks to the SWWJ committee for making the afternoon run like clockwork. Your efforts were very much appreciated by us all.

Sad news from the Pocket Novel World…

Sad news from the pocket novel world…

My Weekly are ceasing publication of pocket novels after March this year. As far as we know, People’s Friend pocket novels will be continued to be published and a new one is available every fortnight in good newsagents and supermarkets. The definition of ‘good’ in this context is a shop that stocks them. Sadly, that rules Waitrose out. Perhaps they are just too posh for pocket novels? Their loss!

I have many happy memories of writing my pocket novel Melody Rose for My Weekly a few years ago. Here is a link to the book on the My Weekly website (which is well worth a browse). I love this cover!

The book is still available as a large print Linford romance in libraries. Another great cover. Thanks, Ulverscroft. Please ask your local library to order it if you don’t see it on the shelf. ISBN 978-1444852677

And you can buy the book for kindle or as a paperback as Play it Again on Amazon. The kindle version is only 77p at the moment. Absolute bargain!

Play It Again is a longer and less ‘closed door’ version of Melody Rose and is my original version of the tale of Melody Rose and Zack. I was asked to tone it down for My Weekly! But fear not, Play It Again is still a gentle and uplifting love story, just a little less closed door than most pocket novels. And, in my opinion, a better novel for being so.

Play It Again

Starting Again

Book 3, the final book of my trilogy The Heart of Bath, has been published today by Dragonblade.

I’m very happy with the gorgeous cover, designed by Dar Albert of Dragonblade Publishing. You can see Marianne wearing a beautiful new dress that her aunt, Lady Barrington, has just had made for her, with Edmund standing behind her in the Pump Room in Bath.

Marianne is a young widow whose husband was killed at Waterloo and Edmund is the rather spoilt and entitled heir to the Templeton fortune. Both Edmund and Marianne are under pressure from friends and family to marry, but neither wants to. Marianne, because her heart has been broken with the loss she has suffered, and Edmund, because he is having far too good a time to want to be tied down with responsibilities.

Their determination that they NEVER want to get married leads to a friendship between them. When they visit the Pump Room, they chat and discuss how convenient it would be if other people thought they were an ‘item’. Their friends and family would then stop pressuring them to look for suitable partners.

What could possibly go wrong with this plan? Quite a lot, actually! Especially once Marianne and Edmund start to fall for each other.

As with most romances, I think we all know how this tale is going to end. But it’s how Marianne and Edmund get there that’s interesting…

A heart-warming romance set in Regency Bath…

Marianne Pembroke has been sent to Bath by her parents to stay with her aunt, the formidable Lady Barrington, for one purpose only – to find a new husband. Widowed tragically young, Marianne’s circumstances mean that she must be successful in the marriage market or suffer the indignity of becoming a governess. But Marianne is determined to remain unwed, for she fears her heart bears so many scars she will never be able to love again.

Edmund Templeton is the heir to his father’s title and fortune. His parents think it is high time he settled down and made a suitable marriage, but he is in no hurry to give up his life of leisure. For where would be the fun in that?

Once Marianne and Edmund discover what they have in common – a wish not to marry – they become firm friends, a situation they are both sure they are perfectly content with. Then events take a dramatic turn with a sudden illness, a duel and the re-emergence of an old enemy of the Templeton family who is not quite what he seems…

Will love save the day?

Publication of Lost and Found

It’s been a busy time!

A few days before publication, an author interview appeared on the Dragonblade website which you can read here:

On the evening before publication of Lost and Found, I attended the Society of Authors’ Summer Party – and the official photographer, Adrian Pope, took a sneaky photo of me outside in the courtyard clutching a glass of elderflower and holding forth about something or other. Wish I could remember what it was!

I rushed home after the party because I was due to take part in a Facebook Live with four other Dragonblade authors. Finding a suitable time for this had proved challenging because of the time differences, but we settled on 5.30pm ET, which is 10.30pm in London. It was great to be able to ‘meet’ other authors who live on the other side of the pond. We all had books coming out within the week and were asked to introduce our books (no spoilers!) before a general discussion. The time flew past!

On publication day itself, 21st June, I spent a lot of time creating posts for the Dragonblade Publishing Readers Group and then answering comments as they came in. As we were talking about Regency Romance, I shared the Bridgerton Netflix AI portrait creator with readers. If you haven’t tried it before, it’s a lot of fun! You can find it here. And this was my result, which I find a tiny bit scary…

I found time to go out for a celebratory coffee mid morning – with my husband, and my new bag which a very kind friend had given me.

All in all, a very busy and exciting time! And now, if you will excuse me, I need to go and read some of my book reviews…and start promoting Book 2 which is already available to pre-order on Amazon.
