BookGoodies Cover Contest
Hello everyone in blog land - hope you're well?
A couple weeks back I entered my second book - The Guardian and the Rogue Shadow - into a book cover contest. The reason being that a lot of people have taken notice of the cover and I do think that myself and the designer came up with a really great, stand-out cover.
The cover HAS made it through the first round and is now at the voting stage... scary stuff... but this is where it (and me) needs all of YOU!
If you like the cover, loved reading the book, please head over to the link below and help get it the votes it needs to win. Apparently the way the winner is calculated is by a mixture of how "likes", "tweets", "G+" and comments are made on the page. So as I say if you do believe the cover is a winner, head over and do one of the above :)
Here's the link : BOOK CONTEST
Fingers crossed and hopefully The Guardian and the Rogue Shadow could win an award!

FINALLY - I visited Hogwarts...
Well... kind of... parts of it anyway!
On Sunday I (along with my wife and kids although OF COURSE all that mattered was that I was there) finally got round to visiting The London Harry Potter Studio Tour and honestly if you haven't, and you're fan of HP, it’s just incredible. The moment you step in those glass doors you're just overcome by the whole Harry Potter movement and then, after a short wait in the queue, you enter a small room with screens either side. A lady appears as if by magic - of course she merely walked in through the crowd but this is Potter Land don't forget - and that’s when it hits you. On the screens they play you a build-up, from the start how the books were chosen in true underdog fashion. Bottom shelf, low priority books to being transformed into this phenomenon! It's truly incredible and won't happen again in my life time, not to this scale. Harry Potter is truly one of a kind, whether you loved the books, Rowling’s writing, or not Harry and the gang are on their own level.
So As you may be able to tell I love Harry Potter, always have, and really it was JK Rowling and the impact of her books that made me even want to try to write a book. Generally, as far as story-telling goes, I'm more drawn toward TV Series or movies but I read the Harry Potter books cover-to-cover, back-to-back. I had NEVER done that before. I have been known to watch a TV series back-to-back, even taking out a whole day to an entire series but with books... this was just ridiculous. But it just shows how far reaching the story as a whole is. Say what you like about her writing ability, whether she is a literary genius or just a lucky average author, but the fact is the ideas, the characters and the world she created has touched more people (not just children or one particular gender) around the world.
It was surreal walking around the sets - I don’t want to spoil too much for anyone who hasn’t been - seeing the costumes etc. but for me it was world building for the films that was just unbelievable. The people responsible are the geniuses because there were designs from paper to small models or rooms, buildings and then the granddaddy. A huge scaled model of Hogwarts... it is something to behold. The time and the effort that had clearly gone into that model alone was mind boggling. Something like that must have been so much fun for a creative mind to dig into, I would have loved to been involved although with Harry Potter I would have loved to be involved in anything!
So I most definitely enjoyed myself and so did my three boys (ages 7 and twins are 4) seeing their eyes light up was always a great feeling as they all love Harry Potter and knew everything they were looking at. I think all of us as authors would love to have even a quarter of the impact Rowling has had on the world I know I would! But whatever happens she was definitely an inspiration for me, even taking her background out of the equation, she proves that sometimes out of nowhere a story can do some wonderful things. I hope my mine can too.
In other news it was my eldest son’s birthday - he is now seven - which was the reason for going to the HP Studio Tour in the first place. My much talked about ankle is doing very well; I even managed to get back in the gym last night which was great! Book Three is coming along smoothly; I have a good feeling again about this one it’s going to be a pivotal moment in the series so keep an eye out for any previews in the near future! What other things can I bore you with... I bought Ed Sheeran’s new album recently and its awesome, that guy is THE guy. Great second album and I have it on repeat at the moment so I must like it quite a lot. Tracks 3, 4, 5, 9 & 11 are my favorites - if you were wondering :p
That’s it really, catch up soon when I have more book news or anything else to bore you with :)

So... interesting week
Like every Wednesday night I get the chance to spend an hour with 10/12 other guys reliving our younger years by playing a football match on one of these new 4G pitches. It is probably one of the highlights of my week, de-stresses me, puts a smile on my face and keeps me relatively fit. Last Wednesday however was a little different.
We had played around fifty minutes so far, I of course was producing football that could only be described as a crossbreed of Ronaldo, Iniesta, Henry and with a sprinkling of Kompany... I know, sounds awesome right? Anyway, Time was ticking and then bam. My ankle goes over and within seconds I am on the floor trying to put my fist through this new artificial pitch. It hurt, a lot.
The guys were brilliant, called me an ambulance, hung around until it turned up and tried to keep me laughing. But the opinion of everyone watching my ankle triple in size was that it was broken. What wonderful luck I have right? Short story, and a very long wait at the Accident and Emergency, I am told the ankle is not broken. "Yes!" I thought but was brought straight back down to earth by being told that it is a Grade 3 Sprain with torn ligaments across the ankle. "Oh and by the way," they said, "Thats worse than a break."
Excellent. Thank you very ******* much.
So as you will see from the picture above, I am now mainly in one of these trendy ski boots and not a cast. I say mainly because I can take it off when I'm in bed etc which is good, but most of the time you will find me one boot short of a ski slope. The best/worst thing that has come of this is that I have spent all of my resting time watching the 24 Boxset from episode one and am now almost through to Series Four! Thats an incredible amount of time to waste on a show right? I know :/ but its soooo addictive! I have been back to work also, my resting period was about 3 days in bed but now one week on I feel okay. The swelling is down and it hurts mainly in the morning PLUS with the boot on I can walk pretty well.
So that's my week so far. Football, Injury and Jack Bauer. The Good, The Bad and the incredibly Awesome yet Time Consuming. Hopefully I will have a preview chapter for Book Three up and running soon so look out for that and have a great week - without injury.

I once was lost but now I'm found...
Don't panic I'm not about to go all "preachy" on you, but I am about to make a vow.
Since the release of The Guardian and the Rogue Shadow I have slowly but surely found myself being dragged away from the Part-Time fun that is writing. I have been suffering with an issue that many indie writers tend to suffer with at some point and I don't mean an embarrassing rash in an embarrassing location. I'm talking about Writers Doubt.
That may not be an official term - and if it isn't I am coining it - but it is the best way to describe it. The symptoms of the dreaded WD include doubt - of course - about every aspect of your writing, about the glowing reviews and whether they are just a sack of lies. Thinking about whether family and friends truly believe in your writing ability or whether they were actually the same type of people that push the horrifyingly bad singers onto the X-Factor just to be ridiculed on a grand scale. When initial sales slump and your previous plans to become the "Next Big Thing", able to quit your job and write for a living, evaporate only to be replaced by an empty desire to quit completely.
All of these things - plus any more you guys out there wish to share - culminate in any and all motivation to just up and leave without a trace and that is just so, so sad. This is exactly what has happened to me. I was warned, I had read other blogs and spoken to a fair few other indie authors who had been through the same thing but at the time I had no concern over myself. I knew I couldn't ever lose motivation doing something I loved... but it happened. Up until a few days ago I hadn't touched my twitter, GoodReads or this website. I hadn't even looked at my amazon rankings - which was a daily routine for me in the past - WD was my own personal Dementor! I had put down the pen and didn't have any intention of picking it back up until a small light broke through my dark clouds.
Like most indie authors out there I had sent off free copies of my books to bloggers, book reviewers, website etc. etc. and several days ago I received an email out of the blue. Back at the end of 2013 amongst the pile I had sent out was Charline Ratcliff. Charline is VERY helpful to people like me, maybe some of you, in that she offers a review service alongside all of the other things she has going on. We all know people like her, they are a godsend to authors but i have NO idea how they find the time!
So, originally her review was planned to arrive to me early in 2014, she was inundated with other books and, as stated above, had her own things going on too. Instead, maybe by fate, her review arrived with me at the end of June where I really was not even thinking about writing. It landed in my inbox and it was a great review but more importantly it came at the exact right time. I'm not saying that the review itself was life-changing, I know it’s not going to suddenly make me sell millions of books, BUT it was the start of a turn around. I then shared a few emails with Charline and we chatted about WD - not that I called it that at the time as I didn't really want to sound like an idiot in real-time - and her positive attitude only aided my change of heart.
Slowly but surely over the past few days the writing itch has returned, motivation is calling me and it's in part thanks to the perfect timing of a book blogger / writer / all-round awesome person - Charline Ratcliff. So it's worth noting that although WD can seem irrepairable, like a bottomless pit of self-woe, sometimes the small things can break through the clouds and return you back to your previous highs. It can force you to pull on your super creative writing hat and cape - just me? - and return to the battlefield to fight for your place on the virtual shelf of kindles around the world.
From now on I will be doing just that, Book Three will be underway very shortly and hopefully released soon after. If you want to share your own experiences of Writers Doubt let me know in the comments below or why not check out Charline Ratcliff at http://www.charlineratcliff.com/ and maybe she can inspire you too.

A moment that warmed the heart...
So I came home from work - a long day 7:30am to 6pm - said my hellos to my wife and three boys then climbed upstairs to get changed. As I did the bedroom door burst open and in came one of my four-year-old twins. He was excited to have me home and as normal wanted to have a quick chat with me whilst he bounced on my bed attempting to reach the light bulb.
In conversation he asked, "Have you been to work Daddy?"
"Unfortunately, yes," I replied.
"When I get big, I want to be like you and draw pictures of houses."
This small, short sentence gave me that feeling of warmth that only your children can give you. It also made my Architectural career sound very simplistic, but I let him off.
"Really?" I asked with a huge smile, "You can be absolutely anything you want - you don't have to do what Daddy does!"
"No." He said, "I want to be Daddy when I get big."
And with that he ran out and back to play with his brothers. That was one of those difficult to describe moments that can't be explained to people without children, to me it was priceless. It also gave me an idea.
My three boys have also shown an interest in telling stories, albeit some stories are their own take on existing tales but still they really enjoy doing it. So, what I am going to do, here on this blog, is type up their stories on a whim and give you a little taste of three possible best-selling authors of the future!
To be honest, they're probably a lot better than mine so watch this space :p

The week after the big weekend...
So I had some pretty decent download figures during the free promo for Dream Crawler - The Guardian and the Dream Crawler - which was just excellently flattering.
As book one had been out for over a year I wasn't expecting much in the way of free downloads, not to the extent that it achieved, so honestly it was a great feeling. In Total the worldwide figure (still strange to say) was in the thousands - astounding. But of course this free promo had a more important purpose and that was to push the release of book two - The Guardian and the Rogue Shadow.
The Guardian and the Rogue Shadow #2 has maybe been in the making a little longer than I wanted - that's life I guess - but I'm very proud of it. There were times I doubted myself BUT it got there and the outcome has been great. It has received a fair few downloads so far which is fantastic and long may it continue. Of course now I have to get on with book three! An authors work is never done it seems!
In other news, non - author related, I have been enjoying a few new series on TV although there are SO many to keep up with! Thankfully we have the invention of Sky + to help us with that. I have Karl Pilkington's - The Moaning of Life and Stephen Merchants - 'ello ladies for my comedy. Both brilliant by the way. Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and now Dracula are also waiting to be watched on my planner. Walking Dead is awesome, Game of Thrones brilliant and Dracula looks promising too so yes, when I'm not writing, working, being a husband and father I will try to catch-up with those...
My weekend was also made all the better by my team Newcastle United beating Chelsea 2-0! Very, very good weekend indeed.
Hope you're all well and I will try to do this more often :)

Rogue Shadow is here!
Hi everyone, just a quick blog to announce the release of
and I am very excited! For everyone that has read the first book, enjoyed it and have been looking forward to the second book - thank you! For those who haven't read the first book but like the look of Rogue Shadow, check out
first, in fact today is the very last day to get Dream Crawler free for your kindles. It has already been downloaded thousands of times this week so get it while you can!
For me, getting book two out is just awesome. I feel it carries on fluidly from the first book and not only that but it builds from Dream Crawler. I am looking forward to seeing the ratings and reviews for this book, hopefully it can be as well received as Dream Crawler because I had some lovely things written about book one! :)
Anyway, enjoy the book if you grab it, and leave reviews and comments so I can see what everyone thinks!
Thanks guys!
