Meryn Callander was born in Portland, Australia, in 1952. She graduated from Monash University, Melbourne, with degrees in both economics and social work. At 25, she quit her position working with children in crisis, feeling she was doing little but applying Band-Aids to gaping wounds. Searching for that illusive something more, she headed to Europe, and then the U.S.

It was there she met John W. Travis, M.D., known to many as the founding father of wellness. Their marriage and professional partnership spanned almost three decades, during which time they pushed the leading edges of wellness—going well beyond the popular focus on nutrition and physical fitness, into the mental and emotional, interpersonal and spiritual dimensions of wellbein

Where did you get the idea for your current book?

Two or three years prior to writing this book, the word infidelity was not in my vocabulary. I had lived in a world where “no one I knew,” had an affair. Then, one day, it seemed my world turned upside down. Suddenly, in a state of shock myself, I was hearing from women who had been betrayed—and women who have, themselves, betrayed.

It was as if a door had opened into a whole new world I had been oblivious to—the devastation, indeed trauma, that a woman experiences on finding her partner has cheated on her. I discovered that many women carry remnants—albeit unconsciously— of this trauma in their body and psyche even years later. I discovered how deeply her partner’s betrayal impacts not only her, but also her children.

Seeing how deep infidelity cuts, and how the pain ripples out to touch our families and communities, I felt deeply concerned that infidelity has become an accepted way to exit or to challenge a committed relationship, or simply to “get a bit on the side.” And deeply concerned that every act of infidelity normalizes and legitimizes another.

I believe that as is true for many authors, I don't get to choose what I write about, it chooses me. Whatever I write about is a reflection of what is showing up in my own life at the time. It is in part, my attempt to understand and make sense of my world—and my desire, my need, to share that understanding and encourage dialog around issues of current import and relevance.

“Virtually all women will always carry the scars and a deep sense of loss and grief from the betrayal. Whether a woman has stayed, left, or been left, it must be remembered that time is the salve on this journey towards forgiveness and healing, because it is also a process of grieving.”
Meryn G. Callander, After His Affair: Women Rising from the Ashes of Infidelity

“I will eternally give thanks for those women who essentially said, ‘Yes, I see you. And I love you. I see your pain. You have every right to be right where you are, right now. And you will come through this. You will.”
Meryn G. Callander, After His Affair: Women Rising from the Ashes of Infidelity

“As mature adults, are we not called to a level of discrimination and consideration for the repercussions of our actions on others? Yes, the power of that surge of sexual energy cannot be underestimated—but knowing that every feeling, every impulse, does not need to be acted on … at what cost does a person follow that desire? At what cost to one’s own sense of self-worth and integrity, and at what cost to others?”
