The Hypnotist

Morbidly - violently good. I swore before I finished I would never read another by these authors. I've since bought them all. They are so good and I miss Stieg Larsson and I've read ALL of Jo Nesbo's - my current favorite. The hypnotist is good! Don't let the three stars fool

The keeper of Lost Causes

Mix c2 parts chilled vodka, one part Earl Grey tea, generous squeeze lemon and pour over ice then settle in - as much as is possible - for this riveting crime/thriller book. I've been looking for the next Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo. I tried one it was much to woman-violence oriented. But this book has a wonderful captivating "hero" in the new Department Q with his quirky sidekick in this Danish thriller. I can't wait to buy more. I won't give anything away - as those that know me know I don't tell plot (I hate to read plot - just stumble blindly into it). Not too violent, but a real page-turner. Carl is my new hero (even if he doesn't down vodka like our other northern heros cum cops cum thrillers) Get this book

Carnival for the Dead

Its an extremely rare thing when I do not finish a book. I'm always hopefully a book is a slow burn and will turn around - but this book was a killer for me. I couldn't finish it. So confusing as to what was going on - not that I even care - not one of Hewson's better books - and I am a fan. So skip this and instead pour a Spritz:
2 oz prosecco
1 1/2 oz Aperol
splash of Pellegrino
a green olive

and pick up another book by Hewson he is a really fine author when he sticks with his Nic Costa character.

Jar City

First make yourself an Icelander Icicle:
1 1/2 oz cold vodka
3/4 oz cream
splash of mint liquor, garnish with mint leaves and pour over ice - then settle in for this light Reykjavic - not quite thriller - but detective novel. I finished it in a couple days. The lead character has his own problems besides a dead old man, his pregnant drug-taking daughter, a 40 year old rape case. I loved the setting (I've been to Iceland) and the genetics element. I would definitely read more from this series. Not a "girl with a dragon tattoo" but different - which we so often need!

A Conspiracy of Faith

There are several warnings - no, as you know I barely discuss plot, I won't be giving out spoilers. I hate when a reviewer tells the plot. First careful when you buy this book, I see it listed under different titles. I've made the mistake of ordering another of Jussi Adler-Olsen's books and then realized they are listed under multiple titles. The second warning is DO NOT READ THIS BOOK AT NIGHT. This book is so deliciously creepy the only accompanying drink I can think of is a warm peppermint martini with coffee to keep you awake.
1 oz peppermint schnapps
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz espresso warm
1 tsp creme de menthe
good rich dark chocolate
I love this writer. He thrills me and makes me laugh. This is a Dept Q novel - with the wonderful Detective Morck, his Pakistani assistant Assad, and his punk asst. Rose. Anything involving the disappearance of children is enough to raise the hackles. Its got a spectacular car chase that will keep you on the edge of your seat rooting for the outcome.

The Girl on a Train

Fast-paced, loveable, engaging. Settle back for a quick read with some seriously flawed characters:

A twisted lemon drop:
1 1/4 oz vodka - chilled
1/4 oz triple sec
1/4 oz lemon juice
a dash of bitters
garnish with a sprig of rosemary and lemon

You'll enjoy this book even while you pretend to hate it.
