I can go months without writing a poem fit for publication...but I try not to worry about it. I just keep reading poetry by other poets and maybe try some lines here and there when the inspiration hits me. There are also tons of writing exercises to play with...different poetic forms to practice on, etc. All the work you put into writing pays off eventually.....you may never use some of the stuff you write, but you may be able to redeem a line or two later in a different poem that is better. The hard work of writing when it isn't coming easy are building blocks that help you learn and perfect your craft. (less)

Beatitude-A Song for Renée Good

Me and my pal Tom from our band, Mining for Rain, have released a new indie folk song inspired by Renée Good and dedicated to the amazing people of Minnesota.

We also uploaded the song on our BandCamp page for free or “name your price”….with any and all proceeds going to an immigrant rights organization in the great North Star State…the Land of 10,000 lakes.

Here are the lyrics I wrote for the son

“Poetry vs. Prose

One difference of course
is the length of the line.
And some people suppose
that prose doesn’t rhyme.

But I have a theory
that’s more like a question:
If prose is lengthy fiction
is poetry short suggestion?”
Daniel Klawitter

“A Short Ode To Sausage

"Sad to say, there are people who regard lovers of sausages
as relics from a kind of nutritional Dark Ages"…---Charles Simic, poet.

Theologically, I’d say I was predestined
to eat animals carefully stuffed
inside their own intestines.

I’m the first to eat knockwurst,
and the last in a cholesterol tsunami
to relinquish my salami to the authorities.

Whether beef, lamb or pork--
it will end up on my fork.
(I’m clear about my priorities.)

And for those who go into hysterics
proclaiming sausages barbaric,
I want you to understand:

That though you might be leaner
you can only have my wiener
if you pry it from my cold dead hands.”
Daniel Klawitter

“Well, being a poet is a funny kind of jazz. It doesn’t get you anything. It doesn’t get you any money, or not much, and it doesn’t get you any prestige, or not much. It’s just something you do.
---John Berryman---”

“Charles Simic, when asked what he thought of Slam Poetry events: "They are fun, but they have as much to do with poetry as Elvis Presley had to do with Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk".”

“A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.”
C.S. Lewis
