An intermittent writer of science fiction, with occasional leanings towards fantasy. So far I have published one novel plus about a book's worth of short stories and poetry. I usually aim for self-contained works with impact--my idea of a trilogy is three related short stories.

Guy Gavriel Kay has produced some memorable examples (notably in his Sarantium books), and Tom and Janet from Alan Garner's Red Shift are agonisingly unforgettable, but not what I'd consider a favourite pair. In the end it comes down to a very subjective choice: Mike and Phyllis Watson (I had to look up the names), in John Wyndham's The Kraken Wakes, because they endure a lot together, learn more about each other in the process, and are still together at the end . . . and maybe because I haven't read the book since I was a teenager.(less)

A bit embarrassingly, since it saw print I've been feeling written out. I have a number of ideas and unfinished pieces (mostly short stories), but don't seem able to work on them. Still, words of encouragement from the audience are always welcome, and may end up making a difference. Thanks again for your interest.(less)

An important and often overlooked element in a novel is an elusive quality that has been called an “air of authority”. It’s a matter of style and tone, a narrative stance that says the author knows what they are doing, they are t
