Deals are about numbers that sometimes add up but often don’t, leading emotionally charged individuals to bend them in utterly strange ways.

Deals are unpredictable because human beings are unpredictable. No outcome in the workplace is fully predictable, there is always a mystery of resolution and that provides me with endless material.

Just when I think I’ve seen it all I am surprised by greed, power, manipulation, or impossibly uncontainable technology. When I think about my next book, I envision the core mystery as less about how the algorithm works and more about why anyone believes they could make sense of it. As they say, stay tuned to this channel for more impossibility. (less)

The Lives We Touch

I’ve been thinking a lot this year about what we do. Receive Books. Sell books. Ship books. Process the accounting for receiving, selling, and shipping books.

Sounds rather straightforward, yet it’s only the stencil for a rich tapestry.

Behind the scenes, as a company we hire people, train people, pay people for the work they do. We help to build careers, share ideas with each other, learn from

“E.L. Doctorow said once said that 'Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.' You don't have to see where you're going, you don't have to see your destination or everything you will pass along the way. You just have to see two or three feet ahead of you. This is right up there with the best advice on writing, or life, I have ever heard.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

“Satire is tragedy plus time. You give it enough time, the public, the reviewers will allow you to satirize it. Which is rather ridiculous, when you think about it.”
Lenny Bruce, The Essential Lenny Bruce: his original unexpurgated satirical routines

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
Anne Frank, Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret Annex: A Collection of Her Short Stories, Fables, and Lesser-Known Writings

John Lennon

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.”
Plato
