Sergei Chapnin chose baptism at twenty-one — three years before the Soviet Union, one of history's great atheist empires, collapsed. He has been inside the Church ever since: first as a leader of a lay brotherhood and journalist, then for fifteen years in its institutional structures, most visibly as Executive Editor of the Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate—long enough to watch what the Church and its leadership became.
