Favorite dead mystery writer is the peerless Robert B. Parker; favorite living mystery writer is a new discovery for me: Craig Johnson, who writes the Longmire series. I've reviewed a couple of his books, so you can certainly get my take on him. His main character is Spenser with a Stetson.
J.K. is definitely a great choice, I just loved her Potter series, ended up reading it twice. Once for me and once aloud to a young family friend. My favorite dead author has to be Robert A. Heinlien, father of science fiction. I've unfortunately never found a science fiction author who kept my interest except him. As for best dead mystery author, it'd probably have to be John D. MacDonald. His Travis McGee P.I. was just so well written. Ahh, and I just noticed we both like Robert B. Parker. We seem to have similar tastes. Have a great upcoming weekend!
