I'm an aspiring writer, but I'm dealing with two things: I get discouraged every single day because 96% of manuscripts are rejected, and I haven't had an idea for years, literally. You need confudence, because people will tear you down, malign your character, and attribute horrible things to you based on their vicious opinion of you simple, hopeful story. There has always been competition. Let it go. Writing is difficult enough without creating more internal blockages. You should concentrate on telling your stories. Write your books. What's going on with everyone else, or even the industry, has nothng to do with creating your work. Writers write because we have stories to tell. Just tell your story, and the next story and the next story. Nowadays you can self-publish very successfully. Just write and let go everything else. Now go tell your story! (less)

Jill Barnett No. I have traveled to some of the settings in my books, to castles and islands and villages, London, but I can write about my time periods confidentl…moreNo. I have traveled to some of the settings in my books, to castles and islands and villages, London, but I can write about my time periods confidently through my detailed and extensive research. I have to know what it was like hundreds of years ago. What you see now is often not what you would have seen then. Much of Ireland, England, and Scotland were covered in forests that have been gone for centuries. I research what it was like for my characters. I saturate my mind in the period and details so as I write, the setting and period details are organic to my characters and prose.(less)

A writer's disheartening morning

Today I was gathering information on my new book My Lucky Penny, when I saw a 1 star review on Amazon. I read it, because it's never a bad idea to read what bothered some readers enough to give such a low rating. Well...imagine my face when I read a warning to buyers that my new love story was an "expensive reissue of a 20 year old story."
