I live in Sweden, though exactly where changes with the seasons. Writing is my favorite hobby and I've always had a weakness for anything containing magic or spaceships. Steampunk and solarpunk have also grabbed my interest. Other key facts include: sarcastic, bisexual, fanfiction writer, gets along well with cats.

I write 100% for fun and all my stories can be found on my website. I've self-published one book simply to have a book of my own on a shelf at home. If you're interested, I highly recommend reading the updated (free) second edition on my website. ...more

S.M.M. Lindström said: " Gideon Nav is an orphan, brought up in the Ninth House where the dead are more important than the living. Gideon's dream is to escape that dreary place and join the Cohort to fight in the Empire's far off wars. On the cusp of realizing this dream, Ha Gideon Nav is an orphan, brought up in the Ninth House where the dead are more important than the living. Gideon's dream is to escape that dreary place and join the Cohort to fight in the Empire's far off wars. On the cusp of realizing this dream, Harrowhark, the heir to the Ninth House, brings things crashing down for Gideon, both figuratively and literally. It turns out the Emperor himself has made a request of all the Houses that Harrowhark needs Gideon's (unwilling) help to fulfill.

Oh man, this book... It certainly isn't a book for everyone, but it 100% is a book for me. I get that people drawn in by the tagline "Lesbian necromancers IN SPAAAACE!" were a little thrown with what they got. Not to say that tagline is a lie! There are plenty of wIw characters in here, there is necromancy in spades, and spaceflight has allowed humanity to rule several planets and space stations. But if you're going into this hoping for swashbuckling space adventures, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Gideon the Ninth is a character-focused and introspective book. There is plenty of action and mystery, but the focus of the plot is on the main character's emotional and personal arc. It's a bittersweet story that mixes murder, humor, guilt, friendship, decent people, and a loooot of blood, skeletons and a dose of cosmic horror. If you're not up for a lot of Goths Gothing As Hard As Goths Can Goth, this is not the book for you. If you enjoy stories that explore loyalty, trap people in locked-room scenarios, have plenty of court intrigues that will take a long time to make sense, an tantalizing but slow-burn world building where at least half is set-up for the next book, and people with plenty of titles and long names, pick this up!

Side note: I usually don't enjoy 'dark' stories, so I was surprised at how well this book won me over from the start. I think it's because Gideon is so clearly a decent person, covering up a lot of grief, doubt and subliminal self-hatred with bluster and sarcasm. Most of the cast are kind people doing their best. Even the characters that end up doing awful things in this story are very human. The inhuman characters on the other hand feel exactly as 'off' as their situation warrants. For a story that's as gruesome in places as this one, it's surprisingly...hopeful? Yeah, hopeful.

One final, big spoiler thing: (view spoiler)

S.M.M.’s Quotes

“Men had often looked at her the way Vargo was looking at her now, but always for her beauty – never her ingenuity. And Ren, who was used to treating that kind of admiration as nothing more than a useful lever, felt her breath catch.”
