I've just purchased a little stack of books to start off my summer. Some have been on my To-Read list for quite a while:

And The Mountains Echoed
Dark Money, by Jane Mayer
The Lovely Bones
Flowers for Algernon (yes, somehow I've never read that last one.)

But first, I'll finish my current read: Carrie Fisher's, Shockaholic.

What should I add to my list? What is the best book you've read in the past year or two? Something that really stuck with you long after "The end"? (Mine is Annabelle by Kathleen Winter.)(less)

The End of Another Year
I look back on this year as time well spent. Motivated by the loss of my mother (one year ago today), I committed to making big changes in my lifestyle.

For the last seventeen years of her life, my mother suffered from dementia which then

An important book that many if not most young women would probably benefit from reading, or anyone who loses themselves in abusive relationships.

"I failed to hang on to this fantastic story where nothing seemed to be happening. The "tension" builds up well throughout the story, and the end sentence is striking, but I got bored waiting for something to happen. In addition, the descriptions of s" Read more of this review »

While the writing is wonderfully atmospheric, the story is repetitive and ends so abruptly, with so much unexplained, that it feels as if the author just tired of writing, threw down something dramatic, and called it done.
Emerald Lavere answered a question about The New Couple in 5B:
The New Couple in 5B by Lisa Unger
I believe in NYC the terms are at times interchangeable. In fact, though I only know a few people living in the city, I never hear what we in CA would call a condo referred to as such, they always call it an apartment even though they own it.
The New Couple in 5B by Lisa Unger
"They inherit an apartment to die for.

I loved the New Couple in 5B.

Rosie is a nonfiction author of local history, her husband Chad Lowan is a struggling actor in NYC, when they inherit his uncle’s upscale apartment in a historic building. Everything s" Read more of this review »

An engaging read, but the ending was (not really a spoiler, just a general impression) unbelievable in multiple ways which dropped a star from my rating.
