When I was writing Rescue Me, and the challenges of writing a book got me discouraged, I would remind myself of my mission to help homeless dogs. I would look at my little Teddy and think of all he went through before we adopted him, and that was usually enough to keep me forging ahead in the hopes that through the book, other dogs might have a better life, too.

I had just lost my precious French bulldog, Louis, and although I didn't want another dog yet, I couldn't stop myself from looking. I became aware of how many thousands of dogs were waiting for their chance for forever homes, and how desperate many shelters and rescues were for funds. I wanted to do something to help. Finally, the idea for a fundraising book about how we rescue each other came to me and I decided to turn that idea into a reality so the book would raise money and awareness about homeless dogs.(less)

“Dogs are masters of creating emotionally safe space just by being themselves. ... it is as if something deep within our souls resonates with their energy, their unwavering unconditional love and unbridled joy to be in our presence, their undivided loyalty, and complete trust in us. Dogs make us feel special, and teach us by example to relish simple pleasures and live totally in the moment. They teach us there is only now and only who you are, who you are with, and what you are doing right then–and
what could be better than to sniff the wind and be in the company of those you love?”
