The majority of those who feel the book could not possibly be authentic are those whose identities and careers are dependent on their alleged knowledge and understanding of Tennessee Williams. They are the barnacles on the boat of Tennessee Williams, and anyone who comes along and does not belong to their cabal is considered suspect. They are entitled to their opinions and their careers, such as they are. Others are just living in their sinecures of snipe, and they take down many people. A circle jerk on Goodreads is sort of a life, I guess. I'm glad you liked the book, and I'm happy it was recommended to you by T.J. Stiles, one of my favorite people. There is a mountain of correspondence and other things that prove my interviews are real. You and T.J. should come over some night and we'll look through them, then we can catch a production of STREETCAR, done entirely by midgets, in Mandarin, on a beach. (less)

Thanks so much for the question. I'm working on the Marlon Brando book, which is both a memoir and a book about the odd, fascinating telephone conversations I had with the actor for a little over two years in the early 1990s. I'm not sure when it will be published, as I am still working on it. However, I'll keep you posted.(less)

Tennessee Williams: How We Loved

"The fact that I am a homosexual has, I think, led to my marginalization. I do not feel comfortable saying this, even though I have expressed this sentiment before. The world wants to suppress all things confusing to the sexual natures of its people, and, in my lifetime, the homosexual has been a particular threat.

"This cannot hold, I don't think, because every family possesses a homosexual, loves Read more of this blog post »

“All of us are seeking a home, and I don't mean where we were born, or where we now live and have things, but where we can do the big things, the right things. Where we belong, where we fit, where we're loved."--Tennessee Williams, "Follies of God: Tennessee Williams and the Women of the Fog”
James Grissom

“If you’re a writer, you write. If you don’t, you’re dead. You have no home, no reason to be offered a seat at any table, and no reason to live.”
James Grissom, Follies of God: Tennessee Williams and the Women of the Fog

“Blanche told us she depended upon the kindness of strangers,” Tenn said, “but in fact she had never in her life ever met a kind stranger. She dreamed she might, and she hoped that such flattery might convince her captor to be the kind stranger of her dreams.”
James Grissom, Follies of God: Tennessee Williams and the Women of the Fog

“Memory, of course, is unreliable, often evil, but it is the source of our identity."--Tennessee Williams”

“All of us are seeking a home, and I don't mean where we were born, or where we now live and have things, but where we can do the big things, the right things. Where we belong, where we fit, where we're loved."--Tennessee Williams, "Follies of God: Tennessee Williams and the Women of the Fog”

“My places were emotional, primarily. I wrote of locales in which I had lived, or in which I imagined I could live, but the topography was primal and sexual and terminal. It bore no distinct architecture or design or dialect. It was merely human and in peril, which is to say universal. But on Royal and Coliseum and Vista--streets I cannot relinquish--I found my places and I dreamed a narrative. Can I go there and find it again?"--Tennessee Williams”
James Grissom, Follies of God: Tennessee Williams and the Women of the Fog

“The world is violent and mercurial--it will have its way with you. We are saved only by love--love for each other and the love that we pour into the art we feel compelled to share: being a parent; being a writer; being a painter; being a friend. We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.”
Tennessee Williams
