For those who would try to assert that politics should not be confounded with religion I would point out that these terms denote modern divisions of our life that were not seen as separate in the first century. Every time that Jesus taught a Gentile, every time that he criticized the religious leaders, every time that he over-turned a standard interpretation of the Torah, Jesus was making a powerful political statement.
