I can't explain it other than there was just nothing there! This was the most trying time for me as a writer. I was depressed, utterly lost and completely empty, so I channeled my energy with other positive endeavors, but the depression lingered until one day a friend of mine told me to write. "Just write anything. Even if it's crap, just write!" And so I began with daily journals, which was crap, but I was writing again. I noticed that I had also stopped reading, so I began to read again and eventually I got back in the saddle. I still feel that pain today and hope it never happens again.

Run-of-the-mill writer's block happens. The best thing to do for it is to accept that it is normal. If it hasn't happened to you, it will, so don't panic. My remedy for this is getting away from all electronic devices for a while, so I read real books (no e-readers), TV kills my creative spirit, so I avoid it and try to spend time with friends. Taking a trip, even a day trip to a new place helps as people watching helps me. Exercise is good medicine for me when my mind is stuck in a rut. I play tennis, so a challenging tennis match is great because the strategic thinking involved sharpens my mind.

We are history. History is now. What will we teach?

Statue in Jackson Square

Statue in Jackson Square

History screams at me all day, every day, and even in my dreams. “Nezzie,” I say to myself. “Sometimes I think you spend too much time in a dream world.” But history is a sort of dream, and in many cases a nightmare, and yet we refuse to learn from it doomed to repeat the nightmares. History screams at us to learn, but to learn means to examine ourselves and unfortunate
