Carrie studied painting and glassblowing at the Rhode Island School of Design forever ago (BFA, 1994) and spent the next decade recovering from it. She is now a fabric designer, mama and the artist behind SUCH Designs www.such-designs.com. Her work has been featured widely in books like Modern Baby, Kraft-tex Style, Stitch 'n Swap and magazines including Studios, QuiltMania, Stitch, Cloth Paper Scissors, Generation Q Magazine and Quilts and More.

Now in her pajamas at the kitchen counter, she is a full-time creativity enabler. She aims to help you celebrate your inner artist and step into the life of creativity and passion you have been itching for through her new book, The Little Spark–30 Ways To Ignite Your Creativity (Stash Books, 2014).

I am in the trenches of my creative process and it is good. Much chocolate will be consumed. I may burn-up the speakers from playing my music loud enough to drown the voices in my head that are vying for attention. The laundry is piled up–I have to make choices or I won't have time for my creativity!(less)

For me, inspiration strikes when my mind is calm and quiet, and often when I am looking the other way (not directly for it). Commonly, it involves a multi-sensory experience. Sometimes, after a hike on a local trail, my mind empties enough for me to be quiet enough to hear it. When I tuck my kiddos into to bed, staring up at the lit-up fish tank in the dark, inspiration visits me. Then I have to stumble out and find a pen to catch it. We have to be ready for the sometimes-visitor of inspiration by making sure to capture it before it floats away and moves on. (less)

Why I Quit the Gig Economy and Got a Day Job: One Artist’s Story

By Carrie Bloomston Edited by Abby Glassenberg My husband and I had a business for seventeen years. It wasn’t scalable or glamorous. It was just him and me in painter’s clothes working in houses. We painted murals, did faux-finishes, and glazed all of Scottsdale a warm Tuscan gold or medium taupe. It wasn’t fine art […]
