Soarta, însă, a hotărât altfel. Urma ...more

Vorbe, fapte, bani

The School of Night by Karl Ove Knausgård
"But why? I really hadn’t anything to live for. There was nothing left of my life. I would have to force myself. Resolve to do it – and then do it.

For a terrible moment, the meaninglessness of my life out here was clear to me. No future awai" Read more of this review »

As always: witty and original, "Departure(s)" is a story of many goodbyes – some of them not as definitive as it turns out. Death, illness, memory, relationships - all too relevant topics are being addressed by Julian Barnes (yes, he is not beating a ...more

Departure by Julian Barnes
"Julian Barnes mentions two things at the beginning of his latest book: there will be a story – or a story within a story – but not just yet; and this will be his last book.

As promised, there is indeed a story that might be fiction, or may be autobiog" Read more of this review »

Durrell's memoirs of the years spent in Cyprus start as a comedy but, alas, end in tragedy. Inevitable, perhaps because the clock was ticking for the British Empire and in the great scheme of things, the Mediterranean outlet was bound to drift away f ...more

“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods

“The wish to disappear sends many travelers away. If you are thoroughly sick of being kept waiting at home or at work, travel is perfect: let other people wait for a change. Travel is a sort of revenge for having been put on hold, or having to leave messages on answering machines, not knowing your party's extension, being kept waiting all your working life - the homebound writer's irritants. But also being kept waiting is the human conditon.”
Paul Theroux, Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Cape Town

“Never trust a man who reads only one book.”
Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Purity of Blood

“Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead.”
Charles Bukowski

“For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can't readily accept the God formula, the big answers don't remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”
Charles Bukowski
