I am not a medical person, and even when I ask questions to my friends who are, they are like, um...that sounds like they need an x-ray, or antibiotics or specialized laser surgery. So, I've been learning about medicine in the 1800s, and I'm both amazed by what people could do without some of our modern technology, and also completely horrified by some of the procedures.(less)

I read the Horatio Hornblower series, and Nathaniel Drinkwater, and others, and they are a little gritty, so I wanted to find a way to tell a story that didn't have all of that, but stayed true to the times. And I wanted a young woman on the ship, because of course someone has to fall in love with the captain!
The other books have followed along. I wanted to make sure they stayed with the chronological events of the war, and I love setting them in interesting places.

The Blue Orchid Society

This series feels more personal to me than others I've done. A few years ago, I was between projects and considering what I'd write next. I read quite a few books and watched some movies, hoping some inspiration would strike. Instead, I was discouraged. The women in the stories and shows were terrible to each other. They were always in competition, or tearing each other down, or cast as a Read more of this blog post »

What a perfectly delicious romantasy! I am so excited about this series. Caitlyn McFarland has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and this book didn't disappoint. I loved the worldbuilding, the intricate--but not too hard to follow--plot, the i ...more

“The correct relationship will make a person bloom. He becomes more himself, his talents deepen, his personality grows, and he thrives. But the wrong relationship will produce the opposite. The things that were once so vital no longer matter. His talents disappear, his individuality fades, and he wilts.”
Jennifer Moore, Miss Burton Unmasks a Prince

“Amelia would recommend widowhood to anyone who inquired about it, though she supposed it would perhaps be more difficult on women who had actually formed an acquaintance with and felt some affection toward their husbands.”
Jennifer Moore, Becoming Lady Lockwood

“But you must know that a woman responds more favorably to a polite suggestion than a direct order.”
