Doug Walsh is an award-winning author whose books have earned consistent praise from Kirkus Reviews, Writer’s Digest judges, and readers around the world. Through his stories, Walsh combines his passion for adventure travel with a fascination for discovering how romantic relationships respond to the improbable.

Though now dedicated to fiction, Walsh’s writing career began in 2000, in the world of video game strategy guides. Or, as he likes to call them, travel guides to fictitious places. Shortly after a horrific bicycle crash brought his triathlon season to an end, Walsh signed a contract with former Penguin imprint BradyGames. Over the ensuing fifteen years, Walsh proved himself as one of the most prolific authors in the space, with over o

That said, there are simply so many wonderful Nintendo games over the years that's it really hard to pick just one. Other favorites would have to be Super Mario Bros 2, Yoshi's Island, Paper Mario, and Metroid Prime.(less)

Yes, this is a television series, and I'm on a book site, but I've yet to encounter such a wonderfully awful, loving, realistic, sarcastic, authentic couple in any book. Rob and Sharon are the best people. They are the worst people. And they know it.

As far as fiction goes, I really enjoyed John and Helen's relationship in Brian Payton's "The Wind is Not a River" even though the majority of the book has them separated. The trials they both suffered to get back to one another speaks volumes more than any lovey-dovey romantic scene.(less)

Local Author Teaches Story Structure

I’ll be teaching a class on story structure at January’s meeting of the Iron Horse Writers. This local writer’s group is sponsored by North Bend Art & Industry. “Fundamentals of Story Structure” utilizes material from my upcoming novel-writing workbook, Novel Now. I’ll be discussing the scenes that every three-act novel should have, go over the core scene requirements, and discuss the importance o

“Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving us wordy evidence of the fact.”

“Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.”

Mark Twain
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad / Roughing It

Amy Tan
“Each night when I returned to the rooming house in Hong Kong, I lay on a cot with wet towels over my chest. The walls were sweating because I couldn’t open the windows for fresh air. The building was on a fishy street on the Kowloon side. This was not the part where the fish were sold. There it smelled of the morning sea, salty and sharp. I was living in Kowloon Walled City, along the low point in a wide gutter, where the scales and blood and guts gathered, swept there by the fishmongers’ buckets of water at night. When I breathed the air, it was the vapors of death, a choking sour stink that reached like fingers into my stomach and pulled my insides out. Forever in my nose, that is the fragrance of Fragrant Harbor.”
Amy Tan, The Bonesetter's Daughter
