There's no such thing. I used to call it "writer's excuse," but that's not true either.

If a writer is thinking about a story in his or her head, they are writing, even though the words haven't yet made it to paper. What many mistake for "writer's block" is simply due to the writer having several options to choose from for a story, scene or character.

The writer can either daydream about the character and trust where they lead him or her, or to choose a path, write, and see what happens. (less)

This is because Phoebe Pearl could be writing literature on her off hours. Pearl's turns of phrase, world building, and sharp descriptions not only add to the flavor of the story but propel it forward.

This was my first Jim Thompson experience and it certainly won't be my last.

What I enjoyed most was how Thompson tossed aside many of the tropes associated with dark fiction like this and I admired the chances he took in both character and setting.
