This Arizona Immigration cartoon by Khalil was published on May 3, 2010 in Otherwords.org. It meant to represent the inconsistent duality in Arizona government that on one hand wants cheap labor and on the other hand doesn’t want undocumented immigrants.

Unfortunately, this duality exists not only in Arizona. Many American companies and citizens employ undocumented that are not tolerated by their State’s law. This Theater of the Absurd is sponsored by the United States congress that cannot cross the partisan chasm and pass an immigration reform.

Election season demagogy about immigration focuses on illegal immigration, which is rather narrow aspect of immigration reform. Yet illegal immigration is inflammatory and confrontational that fits some of the candidates’ objectives very well. The truth is we need an immigration reform that will protect America’s objectives.

A clever immigration reform should support a sensible pace of population growth, monitor the quantities of legal immigration, and promote types of immigration that enable future prosperity or support moral principles. Immigration reform should protect wages and standards of living of citizens, immigrants, and foreign workers by coordinating supply and demand.

An attempt to fine companies that hire undocumented immigrants is a double standard. America wasn’t able to enforce its own laws and ended up with 11 million illegal immigrants; therefore, the first priority is to fix the broken immigration system.
