I have a Fall wreath on the outside of the door now. My kids put up the lighted Santa and his deer in my yard before the ground freezes too much. People who ice fish on the lake get to see the decorations. I do not decorate as much as in the past because like you, the kids are gone but I must have some decorations.

The older I get, the more I understand why my parents Xmas tree kept getting smaller, until it turned into a 3' tree with a half-dozen ornaments, some tinsel and colored lights. I hated that little tree because my childhood was filled with splendid large trees decorated to the hilt, angel on the top, the Nativity displayed, presents under the tree...wonderful memories. Now, at this age, the idea of having a space in the garage where the faux tree (I prefer the smell of real pine) sits, all decked out ready to be brought it is really appealing. I don't mind decorating—I mind un-decorating and putting it all away. Some years the mom, pop and baby reindeer remain in the back of the upstairs closet because it's too hard to haul the family to the front lawn. One year we had someone hang lights on all the roof fascia. The lights looked nice in the box. In reality, they blinked on and off in the neighborhood and were called "running" lights. It looked like an airplane landing strip from the sky. So, if no parties are planned, I put out some candles and a few decorations for Halloween, Thanksgiving etc. to remind myself of the fun of the season and that the child inside of me is still alive. Watching a child enjoy the magic is totally worth bending and complaining about aches and pains, grateful the holiday season won't appear for another year.
