Whatever Happened to Myspace?

When I published my debut novel, The Dirt-Brown Derby, I'd heard of the social media wonder tool called Myspace. So, I bopped over there, set up an account, and used it to get the word about my next three novels, all part of the P.I. Frank Johnson series.

Did you have any interactions with Myspace? It featured a decent layout and wasn't too onerous to code. I liked interacting with my readers, and everything piped right along. The march of progress then rolled out Facebook and a bunch of other new and shiny diversions.

Suddenly Myspace was left behind as the sheen wore off. Then the format changed on Myspace, and I despised the look and feel of the latest and greatest version. Everything was jumbled up, and I grew more disenchanted. Garage bands seemed to be the largest body of users. Before long, I was picking up viruses. I don't know if Myspace was the guilty culprit or not, but I soon got fed up enough to deactivate my account. I certainly hope so.

Saying all that brings me to wonder about the present generation of social media such as twitter and Facebook (or least next generation to me). It remains to be seen how long the life cycle will be for them. One thing that bugs me is losing touch with my readers with the decline or end of twitter and Facebook. I plan to keep my blog going, so that might maintain contact.

Ricky Bush Yep. Myspace was the first social media site that I joined. Since my book was chock full of blues related lore, I made contact with lots of blues musicians through the site. Then, like you mentioned, it seemed that every time I logged in, a virus jumped on my computer. I abandoned it quickly and never visited again. As you say, fed up with it.

I still get email blasts from bands. Thanks for sharing your experiences and best for your book.
