i wish felicity porter was my roommate...
So when I first decided to start a series dedicated to sharing New Adult television/films that I love, one epic series immediately popped into my brain. One of my top five favorite shows of all time.
"Felicity" premiered in 1998--my junior year of high school. I was a very self-aware, pensive teenager with my eyes firmly set on getting to the hallowed halls of college the day I graduated. I couldn't wait to live in a dorm, meet tons of new and interesting people, and be far away from my overbearing parents. But alas, I still had two more years until freedom--so I lived vicariously through Keri Russell, a.k.a. Felicity Porter.
The story takes place at a fictitious NY school called The University of New York (although I'm pretty sure we can all guess which school it's modeled after), and although nothing particularly earth shattering happens (as in dramatic car crashes, affairs, or beat-downs), I was captivated by every episode. Felicity was just like me--an only child, just trying to live her life on her own. Meeting new friends. Falling in love. Struggling with her new relationship with her parents. Trying to figure out what path she wants for her life. It was a quiet show. It was a slowly-paced show.
It was perfect.
The first season--freshman year--is by far my favorite. So many issues that are commonly faced by young college students are touched on here: date rape, choosing a major, financial struggles, roommate disagreements, learning to navigate new friendships...the list goes on. Each topic is dealt with in a respective yet age-appropriate way. I felt everything right along with the characters.
Although I often detest love triangles, I must admit--this show had an amazing one. The internal struggle Felicity deals with throughout her four years in school is captivating, and the show is so well-written that I could just never choose between Ben and Noel. Each one was presented with interesting qualities and very believable drawbacks, and each one loved Felicity in their own way (I must admit, at the end of the series, I was a tad more pro-Ben). I own the entire DVD set of this show, and I watch it through its entirety every few years. I love flashing back to a time when there was no Facebook, no Twitter, no constant need to be connected to social media like there seems to be in TV shows today. The characters actually TALKED to each other, and sometimes they even wrote heartfelt notes to each other! Remember those days? Because of this, the show remains timeless. Something to be loved by fellow New Adult enthusiasts for many more years to come. Take some time to relish this wonderful show if you have the chance--whether you're about to embark on your college years or just want to look back fondly. I hope you fall in love with the superb writing and complex characters as much as I did! I heard a rumor that the show is available for streaming on Netflix, and all four seasons are available for purchase and instant streaming on Amazon Prime as well! Check them out below!
