[close] What is intersectional feminism? Intersectional feminism centres on the voices of those experiencing overlapping forms of oppression such as ethnicity, sexuality, gender, class and more. What is this group about? Our club is a welcoming space that focuses on reading books authored by individuals from marginalised backgrounds. Our discussions delve into the complex intersections of race, gender, class and sexuality. We explore the works of feminist fighters such as Audre Lorde, bell hooks , Nasal El Saadawi and more! Suggestions are welcome. Join us as we journey through thought-provoking narratives, challenging societal norms and advocating for a more inclusive world where we discover more books of inspiring intersectional feminist authors!

[close] The Århus Feminist Reading Group was founded in May 2017. During this time, the group has met to discuss articles, books, poems and short stories, building new connections between people and generating discussion and personal reflection with each new meeting. The collective would like to create a space here for more sustained discussion and conversation about the books we read together. A priority of the group is inclusivity and diversity, and so with this in mind, the group is not an academic project and prior knowledge of feminist theory is not required.

[close] This group is focused on the sub-genre of Science Fiction that explores feminist issues such as women's roles in society. Feminist Sci-Fi poses questions about gender roles, sexuality, reproduction, and power structures between men and women. Sci-Fi allows authors the freedom to create utopias illustrating worlds free of sexism, homophobia and prejudice, as well as dystopias where the gender divide is exaggerated in order to open a dialogue regarding the role of social constructs in understanding gender. Emphasis (though not exclusively) on the women authors of science fiction as they are often under-represented in the genre.

Each month, we’ll feature reads that tie directly to YWCA Dayton’s current advocacy priorities – economic advancement, gender-based violence, affordable housing, and girls of color– to raise awareness and spark dialogue. At the end of each month, we’ll host a discussion to unpack the book’s themes, talk about intersections, and identify ways everyone can empower women, eliminate racism, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
