2. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee

Written by Johnny Marks and recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958. By the 50th anniversary in 2008, Lee’s original version had sold over 15 million copies around the world with the 4th most digital downloads sold of any Christmas single. In 2019, Lee’s recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In November 2023, Lee released a music video for the song, and in December 2023 the song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart making Lee the oldest artist ever to top the Hot 100 at the age of 78, later breaking the record once again one week later at the age of 79. The song has also set the record as the longest period between an original release and it’s topping the Hot 100 (65 years), as well as the longest time between number-one singles by an artist (63 years, one month, and two weeks). Johnny Marks also penned “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “A Holly Jolly Christmas”. Lee recorded the song at the age of 13, and in a 2019 interview with The Tennessean, Lee recalled that she had no knowledge as to why Marks wanted her to specifically sing it.

#491 – Darkrai

Designated as the Pitch-Black Pokémon, Darkrai is a member of the lunar dup with Cresselia. It is known to “inhabit” dreams and causes the target to have unending nightmares, which can be stopped if exposed to a Lunar Feather from Cresselia. However, the “unleashing of nightmares” is actually a defense mechanism, instead of an intentionally malicious act. It is also capable of flying at high speeds, and it can become a shadow in order to escape danger or contact with humans. The character design seems reminiscent of a ghostly shadow, bearing resemblance to folklore creatures like the bogeyman. In contrast to its counterpart Cresselia’s association with the crescent moon, Darkrai also appears to represent the new moon.

Type: Dark

Features: Darkrai is a black, shadow-like Pokémon. It has a small head with a white fog-like ghostly plume billowing from its head covering one of its bright blue eyes, with the portion on its face resembling hair. It also has a red spiky growth around its neck. It has skinny arms and long black tatters hanging from its shoulders. It also has black, claw-like hands. It has the slight appearance of an hourglass figure and appears to be wearing an old, ripped cloak. It normally does not have any sort of legs, but it is able to extend stilt-like appendages in their place. In self-defense, Darkrai can retract its head and white "plume" into the pit atop its torso fringed by the aforementioned red growth.

Evolution: No Evolution

Pokédex Entry: It can lull people to sleep and make them dream. It is active during nights of the new moon.

To catch Darkrai, please do ONE of the following tasks:
1. Read a book with a character who experiences a nightmare.
2. Read a book that has a picture of the moon on the cover.
3. Read a book with a villain that you think has “boogeyman” qualities (please explain your reasoning.)

#257 – Blaziken

This fire-type Pokémon is the final evolution of the starter Pokémon Torchic. It is also the only Pokémon in the final stage of a first partner Pokémon in the core series to appear in the animated series before its debut. As with Torchic, this Pokémon is the first evolutionary line which all members have a gender difference. Likely based of a cockfighting chicken, specifically the Japanese Shamo chicken breed know for its mane and upright posture.

Type: Fire/Fighting

Features: Blaziken is a bipedal, chicken-like Pokémon. The majority of Blaziken's body is red with accents of beige, yellow, and gray. Behind its head, there are beige, hair-like feathers that continue downward and surround its chest and abdomen. It has a small red face with a V-shaped crest on its head. Blaziken's blue eyes are semicircular with yellow sclerae, and its mouth is similar to a hooked beak. It has featherless, gray hands with three fingers each, and three clawed toes that are not normally visible due to the shaggy, yellow feathers on the bottom of its legs. A female has a shorter mask and hair than a male.

Evolution: Torchic – Combusken – Blaziken

Pokédex Entry: In battle, Blaziken blows out intense flames from its wrists and attacks foes courageously. The stronger the foe, the more intensely this Pokémon's wrists burn.

2. Read a book that is tagged "Fighting" at least 10 times.
3. Read a book by an author with a first and last initial in the word CHICKEN.

Hoenn Region

Welcome to the Sinnoh Region!

Home to the Generation IV games of Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl as well as Pokémon Platinum, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, Pokémon Shining Pearl, and Pokémon Arceus., this region is located to the north of Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn. Most of Sinnoh’s routes are on land, having very few water routes in contrast to Hoenn.

Professor Rowan is the lead professor responsible for providing starter Pokémon to beginner trainers in Sandgem Town.

Choose your starter Pokémon

#387 – Turtwig

The traditional Grass type starter Pokémon is represented by turtle-like Turtwig. This Pokémon is the heaviest of the basic forms of all first partner Pokémon. It also has the lowest base Speed stat out of all first partner Pokémon. This is also the only Grass type first partner Pokémon to learn a Water type move by level up (Withdraw). The design of Turtwig seems to be based on a terrestrial turtle, possibly one of the Asian box turtles. In concept, it may be based on the World Turtle from various mythologies that carries the world upon its back.

Type: Grass

Features: Turtwig is a small, light green, quadrupedal Pokémon resembling a turtle or tortoise. Its eyes, feet, and lower jaw are yellow. Its body is covered by a brown shell that is composed of earth and minerals. The shell has a thick black stripe and a black rim. On a very healthy Turtwig, the shell should feel moist. A pair of small leaves, described singularly as “the leaf on its head” by the Pokédex, grow on a brown patch on its head. This leaf will wilt if the Pokémon becomes thirsty.

Evolution: Turtwig – Grotle – Torterra

Pokédex Entry: Made from soil, the shell on its back hardens when it drinks water. It lives along lakes.

#390 – Chimchar

The second of the starter Pokémon has a form like a monkey. Known as the Chimp Pokémon, it shares this category with Grookey as well. Its appearance seems to be based on a young chimpanzee, however the markings on its rear without the flame seem to indicate that is is more a cross between a chimpanzee and a young baboon. The name Chimchar may be a combination between chimp and char (to burn). In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, if the player chooses Chimchar, the wild Starly can defete it when Chimchar is a 4 HP, bypassing the red HP bar state (which would otherwise cause Starly to flee). This causes the game to freeze. This has a combined 1.56% probability.

Type: Fire

Features: Chimchar is a bipedal Pokémon resembling a chimpanzee. Its fur is primarily a shade of orange, although its face, outer ears, underbelly, hands, and feet are light yellow. Its ears are large in comparison to its head, and has red insides. It also has red markings around its eyes, as well as two pointed teeth in its upper jaw, a swirl-like symbol on its chest, and five fingers on its hands with three toes on its feet. It has a swirly crest of hair on its head. Its rear has a small, round, red patch that is usually obscured by flames produced by burning gas in its stomach. These flames cannot be put out by rain, although they go out when Chimchar goes to sleep, and burn weakly when it feels ill. In the past, this flame on its rear has caused people to mistake it for an apparition, dubbed the "Lantern-Tail". Chimchar is very agile, being able to climb the rocky ledges of tall mountains where it lives.

Evolution: Chimchar – Monferno – Infernape

Pokédex Entry: It agilely scales sheer cliffs to live atop craggy mountains. Its fire is put out when it sleeps.

#393 – Piplup

Sharing a category with its evolved form and Eiscue, this is known as the Penguin Pokémon. It is the most selected starter Pokémon in the animated series, being the first partner Pokémon of Dawn, Kenny, and Tyler. A key characteristic of this Pokémon is its proud nature, with its Pokédex entry stating it is too proud to accept food from others. The character design is likely based on a young penguin, possibly an emperor penguin chick. The name Piplup is derived from plop or plup, the sound of a pebble hitting water. It may also incorporate pip, a stage of growth in baby birds immediately before they hatch from the eggshell.

Type: Water

Features: Piplup is a light-blue, penguin-like Pokémon, which is covered in thick down to insulate against the cold. It has a dark blue head with a primarily white face and a short, yellow beak. The dark blue feathers on its head extend down its back and around its neck, which causes it to appear to be wearing a cape. There are two white ovals on its chest and a small, light-blue marking resembles a crown above its beak. It has flipper-like arms and yellow feet with three toes each.

Evolution: Piplup – Prinplup - Empoleon

Pokédex Entry: Because it is very proud, it hates accepting food from people. Its thick down guards it from cold.

To choose your starter Pokémon for the Sinnoh Region, pick one of the tasks for one of the Pokémon below:

1. To choose Turtwig as your starter Pokémon, read a book with a character who gardens.
2. To choose Chimchar as your starter Pokémon, read a book with a lantern on the cover.
3. To choose Piplup as your starter Pokémon, read a book with a character that you would call “proud.”
