message 3: by Martini (new)

message 6: by Sam (new)

Sam Markus Zusak ist kein deutscher deutschsprachiger Autor... Mag die Liste insgesamt aber trrotzdem ;-)

message 7: by Gecko (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads You add books to the list at the top of the list, at the tab next to "all votes."

message 10: by Des (new)

Des This is a corrupted list with a few goodreads authors having put their drivel on this list and then created several accounts to vote for themselves. Shame

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It's a common practice, unfortunately. It's also why I've put some books on the "Badly Behaving Authors" list ( http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/20... ), in the case of some bad persistent offenders.

message 12: by Emma (new)

Kat "This is a corrupted list with a few goodreads authors having put their drivel on this list and then created several accounts to vote for themselves. Shame"

Who? What makes you think that?

DANKE!

message 15: by Kat (new)

message 17: by Camilla P. (new)

Camilla P. Someone added "Little women", "The Hobbit" and "Frankenstein" to this list... I haven't looked through all the list but I've no doubt there are other mistakes like these. I think they should be removed as soon as possible.

Elentarri Camilla P. wrote: "Someone added "Little women", "The Hobbit" and "Frankenstein" to this list... I haven't looked through all the list but I've no doubt there are other mistakes like these. I think they should be rem..."

Agreed. There is C.S. Lewis on the list too. Last time I looked he was British? Not German?

message 19: by Andrea (new)

message 21: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited Dec 13, 2013 03:18AM) (new)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Although he wrote in German, Max Frisch (currently on no. 56) is not German but Swiss, and as such should not be on this list as it says 'Best German Authors ever'. Same goes for Franz Kafka (currently no. 149), who wrote in German but was born in Prague, which at the time was part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. Robert Musil (currently no. 74) also wrote in German but he was Austrian.

Books by Chinua Achebe, Louisa May Alcott, Mary Shelley, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien have been removed for obvious reasons (being Nigerian, American and British). See also earlier comments by Camilla P. and Elentarri.

Please, when in doubt, do check the author's profile before you add books! (If an author was born elsewhere but later moved to Germany, then he/she can be added, of course)

message 22: by Mrssupervisorrat (new)

message 23: by Luke (last edited Jan 30, 2016 11:06PM) (new)

Luke Removing Kafka and Musil and Frisch for not being German in birth or change in citizenship despite writing in German (again), as well as Hermann Broch, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Stefan Zweig.

Alfred Döblin was born in Poland but is characterized as German in multiple places. He lived in Germany at one point but moved more permanently to France. Someone else can figure that out.

For future reference, Marlen Haushofer and Elfriede Jelinek are Austrians that never/have not moved to Germany, and both Herta Müller and Yōko Tawada live in Germany.

message 24: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited Feb 03, 2016 12:50AM) (new)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Aubrey wrote: "Alfred Döblin was born in Poland .." I'm pretty sure Döblin wasn't born in Poland, because at the time of his birth Szczecin was German, not Polish. So even though Szczecin is part of Poland now, it wasn't when Döblin was born...

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) It says Best German Authors but Elfriede Jelinek (The Piano Teacher, #183) is Austrian, as far as I know. See also my earlier comment

Is this list meant for authors who write in German? The creator of this list hasn't been active on GR for quite a while now...

message 27: by George P. (last edited Apr 16, 2021 03:42PM) (new)

George P. I find it remarkable that there are nearly as many books with just one vote each (about 240) as there are books with multiple votes (about 285).
I voted for eleven books but for just one of them was I the sole reader to vote for it.

message 28: by Karin (last edited Jan 06, 2026 03:44PM) (new)

Karin I just found a Swiss author, Marcus Pfister and am removing his book as well as Austrian author Robert Musil
