Is "novels" intended to be understood as a synonym for "fiction," or meant literally (i.e., as opposed to short stories and plays)? There are currently several anthologies and collections of short stories on this list (e.g., Interpreter of Maladies, E.A. Poe's Complete Stories and Poems, Borges's Ficciones, Best Gay Romance 2010, etc.). Stay or go?

Should Dashiell Hammett - Five Complete Novels be on here? Individually I believe that they are all fairly short but together they are +500 pp.

I voted for it because it had initially been added by the list creator, so I assume it was added on the reasoning that it's not the total length of the omnibus edition that counts but the length of each individual novel.

Just lazy and/or indecisive as I took it from my lists then could not decide which to nominate in particular, but yeah, I like them all and together they are... too long. Not thinking too much about collections, but think I will add an Alice Munro...

Well, if short story collections and anthologies are on this list (many of which are -- in total -- also longer than 200p./50k words, shouldn't that also apply to the odd collection of novels? Your list, of course. And I do admit to adding one further of those of my own, Tolstoy's Great Short Works, because I was coming up against the 100 book limit as it was, and I really did want to add virtually every single entry in that book ...

My list? I ran into that 100 limit too, but do not have an answer, do not know how to limit the list while in progress... And then some works are published in collections like that Hammett one, some are considered novellas, some are just long long short stories. List is open for anyone. My original conception was and is not rigorous, just ones I enjoyed for conciseness, enjoyed for an afternoon's reading. I see other works nominated and think maybe I will read them someday.

i have read 150 short story collections- is there a list of them on this site, or should i create one? on the other, i have about 612 short works also... and now 297 long works- more than 100k words or 400 pages... i like to think that doing these lists are useful for somebody rather than empty boasting. have you discovered any reads you did not know before you saw this list?

Yes, I think these are good resources. The problem I have with recs is that it is easy to have too many, so I limit that shelf to 100, which suggests to me that if I have not read one I must decide if the new one should bump off an old one! I like to read translations, I like to read philosophy, I like to read sf&f, I like to read lit. I see you have read a lot of Nobel Winners, this is one of my favourite awards. I read Jose Saramago because I found him there, or Le Clezio recently, and several Japanese authors, but unfortunately I read only English, so who knows what I miss with Herta Muller for example...

Limiting yourself this rigidly -- wise decision and brave if you actually manage to stick to it (I've found that I can't; at least not beyond a certain point). The Nobel winners are fairly recent additions, initiated by, you guessed it, another series of listopia lists, which brought home to me how great exactly is the wealth of literature by or about that very special group of people (and how little of it I've actually read).

I also noticed several others over 200 pages; Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (#85) for instance is 300 pages and Their Eyes Were Watching God (#25) is 256 pages. These are just examples.
