Does it do something remarkably different to moving up and down or getting stuck or falling? Something like flying, or time-travelling, dimension-jumping, opening into unlisted (magical) floors, etc.?

Please nominate exceptional vertical cable cars and lifts here. :)

Oh, me too! I hesitate to tell you about mine, in case they inspire worse ones. One is an elevator that doesn't go up or down, like I need it to, but sideways, unexpectedly, like a tram, and it's heading out to the airport, which is a 40 minute ride, and I'm supposed to be on the 8th floor for a meeting in 5 minutes, only I left my phone at my desk, so... :S

The worst, though, at the ones with the false bottoms. You step in, and the floor swings on a hinge and you just fall to your death. I have so many nightmares about these ones. :O

I also had a dream that one went right up to the top, up and over the side, and fell to the ground.

(I sincerely hope that I haven't made life worse for you!). :S

Capn I have a friend who works in mechanics at a big European elevator firm. It's somewhat reassuring to know how predictably their elevators function. :)

But you really should never overload one, still, today. Bad things can happen if you outweigh the counterbalance. Hypothetically, of course.

Ahh don't worry, these should hardly aggravate the kind of dreams I have.. In fact, the worst I get have such otherworldly conditions, they may sound laughable to anyone else, but it's the feeling of dread that counts for me, and the elevator ones almost always have that (I mostly feel detached in dreams even with normally scary situations). Though once I wake up, that feeling naturally dissipates very quickly, and I get to sleep in peace afterwards.

To provide context, I would sometimes go up/down to a floor(?) of some astronomical number (by building standards; 4 digits or more) with increasing speed yet never arrive at the destination or arrive at a hidden floor in-between two regular floors not knowing what's lurking there. In one of them, the elevator made some crazy twisting-spinning motion, as if alive and contorting?? It's hard to describe the movement. The thing is, I realize those curious elevators are doing what they're supposed to do. So they're working perfectly well.. and that's where the trouble begins. Your nightmares definitely sound more sensible than mine (ノ_<。)

I have few worries about real-life elevators, though. Maybe of getting stuck.

Capn Wow - your nightmares sound entertaining, in a horrifying sort of way! I feel so mundane! XD

Yeah, so I rarely take an elevator if I can easily take the stairs (2 or 3 floors), because time and exercise. And I make it a policy never to get into one with a full bladder. ;)

I also won't shove into a mostly full one, because it would not be a comfortable ride for me. I'm not claustrophobic - I just really relish elbow-room! XD
