Techno-thrillers explore the ramifications of emerging technology, science, or natural phenomena in a story where your pulse races to thriller intensity at least briefly. The genre tends toward the relatively near-reaching possibilities of sci-fi, and usually includes enough technical detail/explanation to satisfy your inner geek. This is not your classic crime mystery novel. Not a galaxy far, far away. Not a fantasy. Nothing magical. Plausible physics on/near Earth in roughly the near present/future. It can be also be non-fiction, or yes, sometimes it can indeed be rather far-fetched.

Steve Shelby The book Untethered has 44 ratings. The list guidance says do not vote for books with less than 1000 ratings. Please, in keeping with the stated guidelines, delete it from this list.

Steve Shelby Please, per the guidance, do not for just one book. I don’t care if you read 1 book. What we care about is the rank order of the books on the list. So, we want you to pick at least a few books and rank them best to worst. If you’ve only read one book from this list … then … maybe you’re not well-read enough in the genre to really tell us what’s better or worse. If you’re even reading this, you probably have read a few books on the list. I will eventually cull those votes or voters who didn’t follow the written guidance.

Steve Shelby Hey! Decryption Gambit and Blood on their Hands finally went away. I only reported them a dozen times each. Progress.

Steve Shelby Spam strikes the Technothrillers: Best of All Time list again.

The book Connecting the Dots does not belong on this list. It has has 43 ratings. The list description specifies “do not vote for a book with less than 1000 ratings”. This is not a technothriller. This was published in 2021, which is not the timeframe for which this list applies. Please remove that book.

Your account has voted for this book on over 300 lists, including most of the Technothrillers lists. It does not have enough ratings for any of those lists. You have been reported as a spammer.

Steve Shelby Purged Connecting the Dots. Fighting the spam one battle at a time.

Steve Shelby Hallelujah! The book Untethered, spammed on here with just 2 ratings at the time, well short of the 1000 minimum required, has finally been purged. It takes time, but we fight the good fight to keep the quality of the list up.

message 10: by Steve (new)

Steve Shelby Good grief! Another spammer. Hot Wheels has only 21 ratings, well less than than 1000 minimum required for this list, and all 5 people vote for two books by the same guy and all vote on the same list despite well less than 1000 ratings. 100% spam.

message 11: by Steve (last edited Aug 05, 2026 09:25PM) (new)

Steve Shelby This book Hot Wheels: Cool Assassins 2 has 5 pure spammers all voting for two books by author J.O. Quantaman, so coincidentally all on the same day. This list requires a minimum of 1000 ratings expressly to make it easy to spot spammers like this. You’ve been reported.

message 12: by Steve (last edited Aug 08, 2026 11:00PM) (new)

Steve Shelby We’ve had a couple voters who are not members of the group and yet are voting on over 60 books, which no one else but me has even come close to doing. The effect is that they are expressly pushing up The Breach to the top and pushing down Project Hail Mary from the top. Feels like a conspicuous inappropriate thumb on the scale from someone. They haven’t actually read nor ranked any of the 60+ books they both voted on and have no activity. Spam is not that hard to spot.

This reminds me of the Ring of Gyges concept—a ring of invisibility—from Plato’s Republic, which reveals true character. Some people just can’t help but to cheat the world if they think they can’t get away with it. Goodreads seems to be proof of Glaucon’s assertion on the morality of man. If you’re think this sounds like the basis of The Lord of the Rings, you’d probably be right. Surely Professor Tolkien was familiar with the works of Plato.

Socrates argues ultimately that justice does not derive from this social construct … the reputation/shame of being seen by others being virtuous or immoral. He says the man who abused the power of the Ring of Gyges has in fact enslaved himself to his appetites, while the man who chose not to use it remains rationally in control of himself and is therefore happy. If a mirror existed, Socrates would be of the mind that a man looks in the mirror and his happiness depends only on the man himself knowing truthfully whether he’s moral or not.

Steve Shelby This is not a general science fiction or fantasy list. Dune is not a technothriller. It does say “not in a galaxy far, far away” in the list description. Great book, but not in this genre. It has been purged.

The group has a thread with pages of discussion defining what a technothriller is here:
