Brownthrasher Pandora's star is listed twice.

Fixed

message 3: by Casey (new)

Casey I removed
The Forever War by Joe Haldeman

Do we want to have books on these lists by authors the group has already read?

message 4: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Can we take the fantasy titles off this list?

message 5: by Casey (new)

Casey Deborah wrote: "Can we take the fantasy titles off this list?"

Sure we can.
But I think it would be prudent to have a consensus on genre classification and other list related issues. Believe it or not, one person's science fiction may be another person's fantasy. Thus we must establish a few ground rules or these lists may reflect the subjective nature of individual perspective rather than groupthink.

message 6: by Deborah (new)

Deborah I don't want to argue about Fantasy vs. Science Fiction definitions, I prefer to just call it all speculative fiction. But since we have two lists, I think the following books should be on the other list, not this one:

A Night in the Lonesome October
Divine Misfortune
Chasing the Moon
Trick of the Light
and probably others I've missed.

message 7: by Random (new)

Random Casey wrote: "Note: I'm speaking mainly of the types of things that the general public gets exposed to. Most people never browse the SF and F sections on a book store so they only hear about them when they have already become very popular."

In other groups its common to go by Goodreads shelving consensus. If the majority of users have it shelved as science fiction, then its science fiction. If the majority have it shelved as fantasy, then its fantasy. It it seems mixed, then its open to discussion.

message 8: by Deborah (new)

Deborah At least one book is already on both lists.

I just re-shelved these titles over in the Fantasy list.
Thanks for keeping an eye open to detail.

* A Night in the Lonesome October
* Divine Misfortune
* Chasing the Moon
* Trick of the Light

Deborah Thanks

OK, let's see what else I can find. I'll check the other list, too.

Among Others is on both lists.

From the Dust Returned
Necroscope
Ghostlight
Jhereg
Declare
The Nimble Man
Dark Cities Underground
WebMage

Tamahome OMW pulls ahead by a nose!

message 13: by David(LA,CA) (new)

David(LA,CA) So, a question. When something on the list gets selected for the month, do we need to go and delete the book from our votes? Or will someone in charge removing the book from the list make sure that it doesn't pop back up?

message 14: by Nick (new)

Nick David wrote: "So, a question. When something on the list gets selected for the month, do we need to go and delete the book from our votes? Or will someone in charge removing the book from the list make sure th..."

We have several librarians in the group and any of those can delete books from lists.

message 15: by Nick (new)

Nick I removed Ender's Game and Forever War again from the list. Both have already been read by the club and shouldn't be on this list. Please check the S&L bookshelf to see if a book has been read before adding it.

message 16: by Nick (new)

Nick I removed my vote for Redshirts after reading it. OMW is still a better Scalzi book. I think more people would like OMW than Redshirts.

message 17: by Casey (new)

Casey I removed
Leviathan Wakes (Expanse, #1) by James S.A. Corey
because the group is currently reading it.

message 18: by Edward (new)

Edward McKeown HI, I am new to Goodreads and looking for the best SF book group (and I wouldn't mind hearing about movies and TV as well) to belong to. This looks like it may be it. I'm an author as well so always interested in new anthologies, agents and publishers too. Cheers Ed

message 19: by Joe Informatico (new)

Joe Informatico I don't know if anyone refers to this list anymore, but I removed Foundation and Old Man's War since the group has now read them.

message 20: by Geoff (last edited Feb 14, 2013 07:04PM) (new)

Geoff Keep updating it. It's a great reference for future reads. Thanks.

message 21: by Joe Informatico (new)

Joe Informatico I've removed Dragonflight and Downbelow Station because they're the current and previous month's picks respectively.

We should probably remove Neuromancer since it was done a long time ago, but I'm not sure if Veronica and Tom ever want to revisit old picks.

message 22: by Joe Informatico (new)

Joe Informatico I removed the Wool Omnibus because the group will be reading it in May.

message 23: by Darren (last edited Jun 25, 2013 03:44AM) (new)

Darren Ministry of Space is a comic book, and not a very long one. What's it doing on here? Oh wait, the same person who voted for that also voted for The Cat in The Hat, and a shitpile of Elric books...

message 24: by Joe Informatico (new)

Joe Informatico I've removed The Demolished Man because the group read it this month. I've also removed Boneshaker since it is the group pick for October.

message 25: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Sorry, I'm new and accidentallly added two books that have already been read. (It took me a bit to find the read bookshelf.) Please remove them.

message 26: by Joe Informatico (new)

Joe Informatico I've removed Altered Carbon and A Wizard of Earthsea because the group has recently read them.

message 27: by Joe Informatico (new)

Joe Informatico Removed Stories of Your Life and Others because the group is currently reading it.

message 28: by D. E. (new)

D. E. What's The Way of Kings doing on here? It's Fantasy.

message 29: by Joe Informatico (last edited Jan 06, 2015 12:56PM) (new)

Joe Informatico Removed The Martian, Ancillary Justice, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? because the group has read them, and The Sparrow because the group is currently reading it.

message 30: by Adam (new)

Adam LoBue Hey all, I added (or thought I did) a recommendation to the list, but don't see it up there now. I'm new so just wanted to check if I did it right. I clicked 'add books to this list' above, searched, and voted for my rec. Is that the right protocol?

message 31: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome Yes, but there's 5 pages.

message 32: by Adam (new)

Adam LoBue Tamahome wrote: "Yes, but there's 5 pages."

Ah ok, I just assumed new additions would be at the end of the list. Thanks!

message 33: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Adam wrote: "Tamahome wrote: "Yes, but there's 5 pages."

No, it's scored by how you ranked it. It gets 100 points for being your 1st book. If you vote for 100 books, the last one will only get 1 point from you. So the one you added will be higher than most of the books that were only voted on by one person and some that were voted on by 2 or more. Yours was 400th when I looked.

message 34: by Pris (new)

Pris Read books I think are

Blindsight (Firefall, #1)
Daemon (Daemon, #1)
Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet, #1)
Dawn (Xenogenesis, #1)

message 35: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Paul wrote: "Read books I think are

Deleted. Thanks for pointing them out.

message 36: by Ronald (new)

Ronald Carson I think we need to wipe the slate clean and start fresh. There's no way there are 1000+ people talking about the books that are getting chosen over on the message board. (Unless there's one I'm not aware of, in which case, it would be cool if someone could direct me there.) I think there are a lot of votes on these books from people who no longer swing by. Besides, I really want The Minority Report to be the next book. :) I've never read it.

message 37: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca A Canticle for Leibowitz - has been read.

message 41: by Joanna (new)

Joanna A Fire Upon the Deep has appeared again
Shrads of Honur / Barrayar by Bujold is on the list both as the individual volumes and as an omnibus (Cordelia's Honor)
Also The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness should be on the Other List.

message 42: by Ash (new)

Ash Solomon I always have a soft spot for an oldie I read in the eighties:
‘The Dark Lady’ by Mike Resnick

message 43: by Anchal (new)

Anchal Bhatia Not sure the girl with a dragon tattoo belongs here.

message 44: by Keith (new)

Keith Yagerman Braxton Rogers and the Brave New Beyond
How would I get my novel added to the list and possibly the groups bookshelf?

message 45: by Deborah (new)

Deborah I think only people in the group should add to the group's list. Only books that are selected as a book of the month for the group can be added to the bookshelf.
