Conservative is not the same as Christian.

I am a big fan and advocate of the constitution, but it seems to be a touch cliche that it is at the top of this list. Right Impulse - Reaching the future today
Critically low on fiction because fiction helps to develop empathy, kindness, love, understanding, and these are NOT conservative values.

Matthew wrote: "Or books I'll never read."Hardly surprising when a closed minded leftist is closed minded. More surprising when they just come right out and brag about it.

Agreed!
curious. the US constitution and the declaration of independence can hardly be considered 'conservative' as of the respective times of their composition. they were by contrast incendiary, radical documents that shook european monarchism at its foundation. they were the world's leftwing at that time, and continue to be leftwing instruments when the world remains awash in monarchism, theocracy, military dictatorship, right populist illiberalism, and so on.
sologdin wrote: "curious. the US constitution and the declaration of independence can hardly be considered 'conservative' as of the respective times of their composition. they were by contrast incendiary, radical d..."I'll say! They were the complete opposite of conservative. The American Revolution ain't the DAR!
Matthew wrote: "Or books I'll never read."I hope you get around to the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bible, anyway, although the first two are the opposite of conservative, and it's wrong to place the Bible on one side of the political spectrum.
Matthew wrote: "Or books I'll never read."You'll learn to appreciate reading as you grow up. And who knows, you might mature in some other areas too...
Jim wrote: "Matthew wrote: "Or books I'll never read."Hardly surprising when a closed minded leftist is closed minded. More surprising when they just come right out and brag about it." Do you have an original/intelligent/adult thought to share, or do such things die of loneliness in your brain?
sologdin wrote: "curious. the US constitution and the declaration of independence can hardly be considered 'conservative' as of the respective times of their composition. they were by contrast incendiary, radical d..."They can be considered “classical liberal” (i.e completely different meaning with the term “liberal” now), or “conservative” nowadays.
sologdin wrote: "curious. the US constitution and the declaration of independence can hardly be considered 'conservative' as of the respective times of their composition. they were by contrast incendiary, radical d..."Conservatism is the idea of "conserving" the traditional values set forth in the Constitution. Incendiary and radical views are not synonymous with leftist ideologies, nor can they be pinned to any one political standpoint. In fact, one can even say the Left and Right wings have become polar opposites of each other in the modern era. Leftism spouts identity politics and victimhood competitions as open mindedness and inclusive, when it is actually the very antithesis of that.
Zulfiya wrote: "Critically low on fiction because fiction helps to develop empathy, kindness, love, understanding, and these are NOT conservative values."Conservatism does seem to be based more in non-fiction, doesn't it?
Its a little disingenuous to include books written before the 20th century on a list of conservative books. Conservatism is a political philosophy responding to the Cold War, the New Deal/Great Society programs, the civil rights movement, Islamic terrorism, and other 20th-21st century phenomena. To call the Constitution and Declaration of Independence conservative documents is folly.
Guy wrote: "Its a little disingenuous to include books written before the 20th century on a list of conservative books. Conservatism is a political philosophy responding to the Cold War, the New Deal/Great Soc..."These books (and documents) form the basis for the contemporary political philosophy we call conservatism. Though this movement began sometime after WWII and became a national movement with the ascendancy of Ronald Reagan, conservatism is continuation of what was once referred to as classical liberalism.
^ no that would be leninists, trotskyists, maoists, followers of che and castro, followers of Marcuse, SJWs, radical feminists, radical environmentalists, left-leaning student unions, progressives etc
Zulfiya wrote: "Critically low on fiction because fiction helps to develop empathy, kindness, love, understanding, and these are NOT conservative values."Just like a leftist list would be critically low on non-fiction because non-fiction require facts, which is NOT a leftist value.
A good to great selection of genuine conservative titles that's also unfortunately undermined by reactionary garbage.
Sad to see the lack of historical understanding among SOME of the fire-breathing posters here. In this country the forces of book-banning have come from the right, not the left. As Al Gore might put it ... an inconvenient truth.
It's hard to take these book-banning charges seriously. When one surveys today's political landscape, it is the left where the suppression of opposing ideas occurs. Do liberal speakers get shouted down as do conservative speakers? Or are they accosted as in the case of Charles Murray? And who is actually banning books? California Assembly Bill 2943 does just that, and that assembly ain't exactly run by conservatives.
I thought we were talking about the history of book-banning in this country. Contemporary youthful lefty intolerance is another topic isn't it? It's a good one, but ...

This is not an argument. What is it about reading these works that scares you so much? Might find out you were wrong all along?
As for my thoughts, I'm a widely and well published author. As I'm sure you are...
"Sad to see the lack of historical understanding among SOME of the fire-breathing posters here. In this country the forces of book-banning have come from the right, not the left. As Al Gore might put it ... an inconvenient truth"Utterly untrue. They have come from both sides, but in the last 50 years almost exclusively from the left. Which is why there are so many attempts to ban Huck Finn for using the n-word. You don't suppose it's right-wingers doing that, do you?
Meanwhile there are all these SJWs swearing off "old dead white men" because somehow reading Moby Dick is to capitulate to the patriarchy. Or something.
There isn't a single honest ounce of self-reflection remaining on the entire progressive side.

Do ad hominem attacks constitute a rational argument? BTW, are you a Trump supporter?

What the hell does it matter if I am a Trump supporter or not?And my arguments are perfectly valid. You need to read up on ad hominem. You clearly do not understand what it means. In fact, you engaged in it by not addressing my criticism, merely calling them boasting and irrational, telling me to take a chill pill, and then trying to slant the conversation into some kind of political litmus test.
The left has lost any ability to make a valid point that isn't in some way an insult or a dismissal.
By the way, you never answered the question. What do you find so scary about reading a book that challenges your worldview? If not for the fact that deep down you understand how flawed it is...

I suspect that I already am anyway. You strike me as someone who likes to argue for the sole purpose of listening to(or reading, in this case) your own words. Nothing you can say will turn me into a right-winger, and nothing I can say(I suspect) will be changing your mind either.
That's probably accurate. But then the whole idea here is that people like you, Chris, are unwilling to even consider ideas contrary to your own. It's off-putting, at best, and it means you are demonstrably ignorant. Because while I know all sides of most arguments very well, you know only what your own narrow-minded worldview can stomach. In a way, there's nothing less liberal than a progressive.

Conservatives conserve the Constitution and original US values. That's what we are conserving. We are the constitutional originalists that protect the stable consensus system, & "Liberals"/Socialists/Communists/Authoritarians believe this foundational document is subject to changing interpretations to whatever they want based on their emotions etc. all in order undermine our freedoms and impose more government control.
Conservatives believe in individual freedoms, natural rights/ God given freedoms, freedom from as much government control as possible, freedom from tyranny that is high taxes, uniting as states to protect our borders & freedom, Western values etc.
Zulfiya wrote: "Critically low on fiction because fiction helps to develop empathy, kindness, love, understanding, and these are NOT conservative values."Conservatives don't abort babies and I hear now the liberals are going to allow abortion at 9 months!

Abortion is perfectly fine in certain circumstances. It’s simple logic.
Humans are NOT a critically endangered species.

How do you mention kindness and love and then say it isn't a big deal because we aren't critically endangered? You should reread your comment.
