Evangeline I keep being drawn into reading Jodi Picoult books because the plots always sound amazing, but they are so poorly executed it is frustrating!!

To be honest I really don't know what to tell you as that's one of the ones I'm dieing to read too!! I've read three JP books so far and I was excited before starting each one because they sounded amazing, but I thought her writing was horrific. However, a lot of people do seem to like it so maybe you should give it a try! I know it will be a long time before I pick up another one of her books, but worryingly I can still imagine myself thinking she's not as bad as I remember and doing it again eventually!

Evangeline Me wrote: "thanks evangeline! umm... could you tell me what J.P books you've read? coz i dont want to read them first (in case they put me off reading other of her books)."

Sure, I've read 'My Sister's Keeper', 'The Pact', and 'Plain Truth'. I especially hated 'Plain Truth'. The writing was horrific, the characters unlikeable and the ending abominable!

Evangeline Me wrote: "did you see the movie to my sisters keeper? and if you had, was it asctually better than the book? thanks for telling me the other books youv'e read! i might just steer clear of those for a while!"

yeah i saw my sister's keeper the movie and that is what made me want to read the book, especially as i heard that the ending was different. it turned out that the movie was much better though. i'm no fan of cameron diaz but i liked how she portrayed the character of the mother, she was much easier to relate to than the cold mother in the book. and the ending of the book is possibly the worst book ending i've ever read! seriously!! it is totally unrealistic!

Evangeline Me wrote: "cant believe that the movie was better! my mum didn't even want to watch it coz the book was too sad for her! are there any other books of hers that have been turned into movies?"

no that was the first one, and the last according to jodi picoult! apparently she is really upset that hollywood changed the ending so she says she refuses to let anymore of her books be turned into movies. so we shall see....

message 6: by Angie (new)

Angie oh my goodness! really? jodi picoult has been one of my favorite authors for the longest time! don't knock it 'till you've tried it out for yourself! i have read almost all of her books and yes, i would agree that if you read too many of them in a row the storylines seem to blend together and feel repetitive but honestly, these books are just soo easy to lose yourself in--in the best way possible! her writing takes the most controversial topics from teen suicide to religious beliefs and really puts a test to human nature and ties everything together in the most unexpected ways! reading a jodi picoult book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, and yes, perhaps it is not always the most realistic plots but a little creative imagination never hurts and at least these books never had me falling asleep! My last piece of advice/opinion: try a picoult book for yourself to decide if you like it before listening to these (harsh) critics.

message 7: by Evangeline (new)

Evangeline me - are you sure you want to know?? ok then here goes. the ending of the film is that kate, the sister who has been fighting cancer for practically all her life dies. sad, tearjerking, but realistic. the ending of the novel is that anna, the sister who kate made pretend she didn't want to give her a kidney because kate herself had had enough fighting and just wanted to die, is fatally wounded in a car crash. the mother, who has focused all her energies for years and years into not letting her other daughter die, pulls the plug on anna's life support machine right away. kate is given anna's kidney and makes a miraculous recovery. needless to say, i did not find all of this convincing.

angie - i get what you are saying about jp's plot ideas being great. they are different, fascinating, controversial and relevant to our time, which is what drew me to them in the first place. but personally, i hated jp writing style, and just wanted to scream 'why are you spoiling this??' through each book i read. against my better judgement, i am still desperate to read 'nineteen minutes' and 'mercy', because the subject matter of both of these interests me, but i just think jp's writing will spoil it for me. she always does her research and knows what she is talking about, but i just don't like her writing. obviously plenty of people, including you, do though, which is why i said that maybe me should give it a try.

Junk television can be the same way..Then you feel insulted after you watch it...I keep noticing housewives my age and 20 somethings gushing over her books like they were the greatest thing since sliced bread..All I can think is "What low standards you have...Is that what you know to be the best?"
