... and women, of course.
(In BOOK TITLES ONLY -- preferably fiction -- and only if they refer to a person, not to the military or things associated with in general; i.e., not if they contain words such as "army," "fleet," "war," "battle" etc. In titles containing words with multiple meanings -- "private," "major," "general," etc. -- try to go for those where the word actually relates to the military.)

Two Years Before the Mast: A Sailor's Life at Sea - not to get nitpicky, but he was a commercial sailor, not a military sailor. They were picking up a cargo of animal hides.
The Sailor from Gibraltar is a terrific book, but just because it has "sailor" in the title doesn't make it a book about a "military man." It's a stretch to have it on this list.

TA, what about this one --
Jack is a Captain in the Light Dragoons despite there being no mention of "military" in the title?

Titles only on this one, Wanda -- BUT this sounds like an interesting series to take a closer look at?
Laura wrote: "TA, what about Flashman series? And Paul Scott's trilogy also."To the extent that they have titles actually featuring military denominations (ranks, etc.), sure ...
Wouldn't have put War and Peace (#39) on this list, as it doesn't qualify in my opinion. And although a great book, I wouldn't have put The Wars (#128) on it either....Now that I'm at it, how does The Cruel Sea (#138) fit this list? Or Life and Fate (#139)? Or The English Patient? And those are just the ones on my own shelves, as I've noticed quite a lot more.
Seems to me the description cleary says "(Book titles only -- preferably fiction -- and only if they refer to a person, not to the military or things associated with in general; i.e., not if they contain words such as "army," "fleet," "war," "battle" etc. In titles containing words with multiple meanings -- "private," "major," "general," etc. -- try to go for those where the word actually relates to the military.)"
i have no problems with Corelli's Mandolin being on this list, as the original title is Captain Corelli's Mandolin. But how about the others?
I just deleted a ton that didn't belong. 54 if I counted correctly. If I had any doubts about it, I left it on.
