YA ONLY, PLEASE!
"I want your love and all your lover's revenge, you and me could write a bad romance."
Apparently, everyone seems to be taking Lady Gaga's advice to heart, because YA/teen fiction nowadays seems full of corny, underdeveloped, or borderline disturbing romances. Here are several subtypes you might see:
1)The Edward: Boy stalks Girl and tells her he's watching her sleep. Girl thinks it's amazingly romantic and being a stalker is a great thing in a potential mate, and she spouts some trash about him "protecting her" etc.
2)The Instalove: Boy and Girl run into each other one day and instantly fall madly in love despite not knowing each other. (Note: in paranormal books, one/both of them is usually a vampire/fairy/wizard/unicorn special snowflake, and they credit the magicalness of their bond to them being vampires/fairies/wizards/unicorns.)
3) The Sappy Love Triangle: Boy 1 and Boy 2 are tripping over themselves to be with Girl. Boy 1 and Boy 2 constantly argue with each other over who is superior and sometimes have fistfights over stupid things. Girl constantly has angst over who to choose, and manages to make out with both of them in quick succession. One boy may or may not accuse her of cheating on him, but all Girl has to do is make out with him a few more times and all is forgiven.
4)Your Average Mary Sue Meets Mr. Perfect: Girl is a "Mary Sue" who, despite being good at everything and model gorgeous, has incredibly low self esteem to make her "relatable," and thinks she's about average at everything. (She's also a virgin and has never had a boyfriend. Ever.) She hangs out with the "Outcasts," who are nerds, geeks, goths, and maybe even a gay stereotype or two, who are constantly harassed by the Evil Blonde Twig Cheerleaders of Doom. Then, she meets Mr. Perfect, who is extremely hot and (also) good at everything. He's arrogant and every girl in the school loves him, but he singles out our Average Mary Sue as his girlfriend for no apparent reason.
