l Has takako shimura identified as a lesbian?

message 2: by l (new)

l Jillian Tamaki does not seem to be gay. Deleted that book.

Her co-author Mariko Tamaki is gay though.

l Gabby Rivera and Alice Walker both do not identify as lesbian. Gabby identifies as queer and Alice as curious.

message 5: by Luke (new)

Luke Alice Walker has specified that she's not a lesbian.

message 6: by jo (new)

jo Ann-Marie MacDonald is not, i don't think, a woman of colour.

The Necessary Hunger is listed twice.

if we are being very strict on lesbian self-identification this list will become dodgy pretty fast ;)

yeah it's just that Alice explicitly rejected being both bi and lesbian and "curious" would suggest more bi to me. It's a bit hearts not parts lol.

I can't remember the story with gabby. I do remember reading that Mariko tamaki identified as lesbian before she decided that lesbians were basic homonormatives and she wanted to be queer instead.

I do think most of these authors have identified as lesbians though. I don't know if what they presently identify as but I made an attempt lol .

Good catch.

Re Ann-Marie, I don't know if she identifies as a woc but she's half Lebanese.

Also re Octavia, I think Nisi Shawl on LJ corrected someone for including her on a qpoc list, saying she was straight... not entirely sure on that one.

oh, octavia is complicated but sure, take her down, i am pretty sure she never identified as lesbian. i realize now that it's *books* by lesbians of colour, so the books themselves don't have to be about lesbians (or anything else queer)? right? cuz nina revoyr has written other books besides Necessary Hunger, but they are not exactly about lesbians.

yeah, the books don't have to have lesbian content though if they do that's great!

tbh, i made this list just because i wanted to be more aware of other lesbian woc. most of their books do deal with being gay but not all of them. there are some really good lists that are re: lesbian woc characters but that wasn't my purpose here.

message 12: by l (new)

l Gurba is bisexual. Removing her. Assumed she was a lesbian bc her blog is called lesbrain lol

message 13: by Sandy (new)

Sandy Eva Johnson is an australian aboriginal lesbian but her plays are just in compilations as far as I can find.
