What inspired Montana Burning, my work in progress, was a dream I had about a woman encountering a man in a corridor at night. There was some mystery and dark desire in it that I wanted to explore. I also wanted to write a boardinghouse romance with two leads who were polar opposites, so it worked out well. The tension between my hero and heroine was in my mind very early on. I also read Naomi Novik's Uprooted before starting this novel, and the prickly, dark-eyed Sarkan had some influence on my hero, Jake.
