Jason R. Hemmings:
How and when did you create the Fabier series, the characters, choice of houses, locations and story ideas?
Jason R. Hemmings
I came up with the idea for Fabier Investigations back in 2003. The original draft of the story was much more hard boiled than the version it became. I abandoned the idea, unsure of the characters and storyline for the first book, only writing about three chapters. The original title for the book was Jaded. Then in 2015, I wrote Touch Of Honey in Your Kiss. This book developed into Desire For Diamonds, which actually became the first published Fabier book. Oddly enough it is the 6th book in the series. I then went back to book 1 and wrote After The Rain which published in December 2015. I struggled for ages creating the characters like Giovanni, Aaron and Rachael. I wanted Fabier to have everything money could buy, but still long for one thing money could not buy; the return of his late wife and true love, Kate. It gave a lonely, bittersweet edge throughout the books readers seem to love. Giovanni serves as a great mentor to Alex, Aaron is a true friend and Rachael gives Alex endless hope to continue with his life. The chateau Alex grew up at is from my love of champagne. The majestic setting gave grandeur to his background, despite Alex being rather humble. I chose the house and office in Miami to be somewhere glamorous to set the books, from my love of Florida, but the cottage in the Bahamas shows the real Fabier, his vulnerability and reminiscence for times gone when he was with Kate. I wanted lavish locations, so I set the stories across the world. The stories come from combinations of old TV shows, movies, books and my own ideas to create something original and intriguing. I chose to write Fabier in the first person, as kind of a voice over, to give the reader more depth of emotion and feeling, in a way the voice of a friend through Alex Fabier. The first six books are now part of a collection, but no doubt others may follow.
