It depends. A lot of times I'll just start daydreaming and come up with a story line. "The Golden Thread" came out of an actual dream, where all the animals on my farm became human. My husband thought it would make a good novel, and encouraged me to write it.
Other times inspiration will come from something I see that will spark an idea. Most of my short stories were based on fairly insignificant things I saw that made me start asking, "How or why did that happen?"
