MEDUSA UPLOADED is due out May 1 from Tor. It's about Oichi (pronounced Oh-EE-chee), a young woman on a generation ship who has been quietly plotting sedition for most of her young life against the class of Executives on board who have been ruling with an iron fist. She suddenly finds herself on the wrong side of an airlock, but is rescued by an AI named Medusa who is part of plot for a revolution that has been brewing since before Oichi was born. They bond and begin to takes steps, one assassination at a time, to change the class structure of Generation Ship Olympia. But in the process, they uncover secrets that call their entire history into question.
That book is finished and in the pipeline. I'm currently working on the sequel, in which Oichi discovers that running things is a heck of a lot more work than bitching about how other people are running them. Book two will eventually take her back to Graveyard, a world that harbors ancient, alien technology. Both the people of Olympia and the Medusa units were engineered by a Weapons clan so their brains and bodies could interface with that ancient technology. The aliens who created it are long dead, but they left behind artifacts so advanced, other races are barely beginning to grasp their implications. Much of their surviving technology resides in a spaceship graveyard dominated by three gigantic ships that are so old, their hulls have fused with surrounding rocks. These giants are called The Three. They are powerful, sentient machines who are much more complex than the Medusa units, and much more dangerous. Humans have been able to communicate with The Three in the past, but only at a great cost, with a devastating loss of lives. Oichi's people could wake The Three without suffering those consequences, and use them to make powerful weapons. Anyone who controlled The Three would be unstoppable.
And now The Three want to have a conversation with Oichi -- to decide if they're going to wake again.
That's my current project. I'm about halfway done with the sequel.
